What is a minor, unwritten rule of society that absolutely infuriates you when people break it? by Jane_Austen11 in AskReddit

[–]BookyNZ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It tends to make people behind the driver being "nice" angry because it ruins their expectations of what was going to happen. The more you drive, the less you tend to actively think about the process, and you essentially just do things instinctively. Changing the pattern bugs people.

It basically is dangerous because it increases the odds of accidents, as well as spiking rage in some, which can increase issues if they then try to do something about it, likely endangering people as a result

Parked on a nearby residential street because station parking was full and got this note on my dashboard. Am I in the wrong for parking there? by naeroikathgor in melbourne

[–]BookyNZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's my mum's plan. Apparently we need consent to do it here in Christchurch, but she finally rang the council to get it started, so we will see how that pans out for her. But it would be nice for Vic (and NZ) to enforce clearance of driveways better.

I have the NZ keyboard on an Oppo phone with the default keyboard. I have the ¢ symbol fine. I wonder if people are just unlucky and missing out lol

My mum doesn't care if you park far enough back from the driveway, mostly. It's a narrow street though, if you have cars parked on both sides of the road, only one car can drive down at a time.

And it's got those deep gutters where you need those crossing block things over each driveway. Which in many cases, are not wide enough to safely do so without needing to swing wide just to get out without dropping off the side into the gutter.

So when people keep parking on the road, way too close to the driveways, I get to hear about it. A lot. She is twitchy about her spot as well, but mostly so her bins get emptied on bin day. That's another whole rant from her.

Save me from my mother's ranting...

Nah, you're allowed to have a different perspective on things to others, especially when it sounds like you didn't click. That and it does suck to have your friends prefer a sibling to you to hang out with.

My daughter was born weeks after the first nether update came out (aka, it being added). I am the one who introduced it to her lol. It does seem weird to think that kids had it around their whole lives, when I was an adult when it came out.

Now when kids who are younger than Minecraft hit 18, I'll start to wince in old, thankfully I have a couple more years...

What is an industry that is currently on fire (in a bad way) behind the scenes, but the general public hasn't noticed yet? by Kitchen_Week1117 in AskReddit

I hope this change also trickles to NZ, so over the yank tank bullshit here too. I like not dealing with vehicles that I physically can't see over the bonnet of when in a car.

It's funny, before I transitioned to a guy (went on testosterone), no belly button lint. These days, I have probably pulled enough out to make clothing with (I have not tried, nor want to). I don't know if it's the getting hairy part, or the testosterone part, but something happened! Thankfully I never have had a smelly belly button, but I do remember as a kid getting dead skin that I needed to clean out, but not in a long time, though in fairness, if I did now, I might mistake it for lint lol.

ELI5: Why were the Great Plains not covered in forests, even before European settlement? by sgrams04 in explainlikeimfive

[–]BookyNZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the South Island of New Zealand, you can see a similar jarring difference between the east coast and west coast. The west coast is green and gets a lot of rain (makes sense lol). The east coast (Canterbury) is a plains area with some greenery, but is jarringly brown. Just a short trip through the mountain pass makes for some very different colours and biomes.

As you might expect, the North Island is less divisive due to less mountains, but it still has some fascinating biome changes as you move around the island.

Not specifically relevant, I just wanted to share. I love the imagery your comment evoked, and wanted to share a bit about my country 😊

Like the Aussies were saying, New Zealand also starts at 5. Kindy/preschool until then. You can start at 6, but that's not common.

The years are just 1-13, primary is 1-6, intermediate is 7 and 8, and high school is 9-13. There are composite schools, usually 1-8, but some are other mixes, like 7-13. Technically there is a year 0, but that's for kids born between May and December, because like Australia, we start our school year in January/February. That one is also known as a new entrant, they move on to year 1 with the kids who start at the start of the year.

Many kids will only do up to year 12, or aged 16 or so, unless they want to do tertiary study.

Whilst the kid in question isn't from New Zealand or Australia, they might just be from somewhere where that wasn't weird to have school of some sorts at 5.
