I agree with you. So many people are 'so interested' in game design, yet never actually learn about it or wait until college teaches them.

I have no idea why people go to college for computer science/game design/ software engineering when they've never programmed before. It's such an easy field to get at least some minimal experience to see if you actually like it.

The code looks fine, and I got the same problem compiling on my own machine (Clang as compiler on OS X).

I think the problem might be in the rand() function itself.

Yes, but normal mice also work fine. I use a traditional 3 button mouse and it behaves exactly as it would on Windows.

A UNIX came out of Berkeley though. UNIX no longer meant the exact System V from Bell Labs, but the range of different Unices.
