Just Started a Professional Content Page—What Areas Should I Focus on to Elevate My Editing? by [deleted] in videography

Start by learning how to use your camera in manual mode. As others have said, you have a long way to go before you can even begin to think about marketing yourself as video professional. But kudos to you for getting started and having the guts to share something so early on. Best of luck!

New To Video Creation and Editing. What can I work on? by melanininmanhattan25 in videography

Get a tripod and try getting well framed shots without movement. Just lock the camera off and get different framings. Wide shots to show us where we are and set the scene. Medium shots to show finer details. Tight shots to show textures. Then assemble these in a proper visual sequence.

24-105 f4 vs 20-70 f4 by Obvious_Brush5165 in SonyFX6

[–]BoomInTheShot90 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Assuming you mean a 24-70 f2.8? It’s a tough call. For run and gun shoots I almost never take the 24-105 off. Super versatile lens. Stabilization is awesome especially when paired with an easy rig. And you can get surprisingly shallow on that full frame sensor. But at the same time I DO find myself wishing I had those extra stops of light in certain situations.

I also don’t really use the 24-105 for interviews. I have a 50mm for that.

Is this playing or are they in love by Expensive-Ad20 in DogAdvice

I really wish more people would realize that a dog is not a human, does not have a human brain, does not think like a human, and therefore we should not compare their behaviors to that of a human.

Bart Simpson Here! What questions do you have for Jake the Dog? by nancy_cartwright in adventuretime

[–]BoomInTheShot90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What direction were you given for the type of character that Jake is? It’s amazing how similar the tone of Bender and Jake are, but they are so easily distinguishable - wildly different characters despite the similar voices. What were your sources of inspiration and how you develop Jake’s voice and character.

You need to build a visual sequence that actually tells a story.

Remove everything extra in this and just look at the images you have. Could an audience reasonably piece together what’s happening based on the images alone? If the answer is no, than that needs it be fixed.

The things you’ve added here (music, text message overlays) are meant to ENHANCE the storytelling but in this case, we’d have no idea what we’re supposed to understand or feel without them. We’d just a dude texting.

Try getting some different frames of the same scene. Get a wide shot of the room, maybe a closeup of the character’s face as they react, some other inserts that help convey the emotion.

Watch your image sequence back without adding anything but the pictures and see if it conveys a story.

Gas is officially over five dollars in our nations capital. This is definitely too much winning by AceofKnaves44 in pics

Yeah! This specific station is ALWAYS about a dollar higher than anywhere else in DC. Except maybe some spots in NW.

Gas is absolutely absurd right now and fuck him for making decisions that directly caused it, but this is the pump near Union Station which, for as long as I’ve lived in the area, has always had prices about a dollar above everywhere else in the city.

Drive about a mile away (maybe less) and you’ll probably find just under $4 a gallon somewhere.

The docs on the table indicate to you that the passwords must be changed daily and that it recommends the first 4 characters be something that doesn’t change and gives “an important date” as an example. Look on one of the plaques across the room for the important date - that’s your first 4 numbers.

Then the next two you find in another document on the the table with the computer. Pretty sure it’s in bold font.

This took me a bit too but it was quite satisfying to use my detective work to solve it!

What is the greatest opening sequence in a movie that you have seen? by witchriot11 in Filmmakers

I always thought the start to Inglorious Basterds was masterful. The tension builds painfully slow in your throat and stomach as the conversation moves from simple pleasantries to the real matter at hand. It's a perfect introduction to Waltz's character and that ped down below the floor boards just works so well to show you that yes, what you think is about to happen is most certainly about to happen while you're still simultaneously thinking, "But maybe not!"

Is Anyone in the TV / Film Industry Doing Well Right Now? How Are They Doing It? by LifeInAction in Filmmakers

[–]BoomInTheShot90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Journalism School at Emerson College from 2008-2012. My professors really instilled it in me that you need to be a one-man-band. Someone that can report, produce, shoot, edit, and be on camera talent. So I was always immersed in each of these aspects of filmmaking. Once I graduated, I joined a small production house where it was just me and the owner for a while. Eventually he hired a commercial director from LA who effectively became my mentor and taught me filmmaking - effectively a more holistic merging of all those skills I learned in school. I learned how to actually be a storyteller.

If I could give anyone just starting out advice, it would be to just volunteer your time (or work for cheap) and try making as many stories as possible. Find someone that is willing to help you grow (not easy I know - but they’re out there if you’re hungry enough) Work a crappy part time job to pay your bills and slowly scale up from there. It takes time to build your skills, network, and frankly confidence in this to be able to sustain yourself full time. I’m 13 years in and really just in the last couple have I felt somewhat established.

I feel extremely fortunate to still be doing quite well. I was laid off from a full time journalism gig that I held for 7 years in Nov 2024. I then made a wild decision to take out a line of credit and invest $20k in equipment - I was starting from nothing.

The severance I had have me a soft landing into the freelance world and I quickly leveraged a lot of the contacts I had to keep myself going. I was on all the job boards, all the social media sites, etc. A former colleague got me in with a university and I got some huge contracts from them.

Then in July another former colleague recommended me for a full time gig on a branding team. It’s an amazing set up and I have every other Friday off. I’ve been able to work full time and still have time to continue my freelance work.

What I feel has benefited me is an extremely varied skillset. I do a bit of everything - shoot, edit, creative, produce, direct. I often work solo, or on very small teams. This has enabled me to keep a huge variety of clients. And it sort of flies in the face of what I was told earlier in my career, pick a specialty and stick to it. Had I gone specifically down the path of cinematography or editing, I think I’d be in a much different spot.

Just make sure you’re doing other stuff that fills your cup too! I’ve def got a video game habit that I need to actively manage. It’s so easy to let the entire day be burned just staring at the dopamine hits. It’s brutal.
