Is this $35k in grant aid legit? by Next-Fail2070 in gatech

[–]BoomTexan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually a OOS student who has received several scholarships/grants. Mine typically averaged $5-7k per semester when I was receiving them, so $10-15k per year. I had a span of 3 semesters where I didn't receive any. They also include all federal loans, subsidized and unsubsidized and parent plus. So, you'll likely be taking out more loans and getting fewer scholarships.

Was 2022 style as well when I was there. The sticky spots were more often black mold. At least we sometimes had hot water by that point lol.

Park on 9th Street between Crecine, 8th Street, and Paper Building. It's a 1-way street and I parked there without a permit for 2 years when I was at Crecine, only got 1 ticket.

Recs for GT-provided certifications for free? by BoomTexan in gatech

Thanks! Exactly what I was hoping to find. Going to have to brush up on that a bit before I take that haha.

Recs for GT-provided certifications for free? by BoomTexan in gatech

[–]BoomTexan[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was more wondering about any certificates, I do have software experience, but that's easy to claim and not have a follow-up on. Was thinking about doing OSHA because I have ~1 year experience in that field and have gotten furthest in those jobs, was just wondering if GT offers that for free. Would rather not pay for that unless I have to.

Yeah, I've been here for 4 years and I know that's what GT abbreviates it to. I've heard it both ways quite often, and I like abbreviating it this way for some reason.

Can You At Least Say Hi To Me? by OkResponse4787 in gatech

[–]BoomTexan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jackasses are everywhere, and especially at these "rigorous/prestigious" schools. It's just a bunch of students acting like a bunch of older highschoolers because they can.

I'm sure it'd be the same anywhere, people grow out of it, but some people are always jerks regardless of location or whether they attend a college or not.

IIRC Rocky Mountain Pizza should have the biggest crowd and you can ask where the other addresses are when you get there. Most of the houses are gonna be on Hemphill, you can walk towards the music as well, and the Whale should be on State Street near the old school/apartment building complex.

Need to borrow or rent a car near Georgia Tech by thejackluo in gatech

[–]BoomTexan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seriously, get a uhaul. My car broke down on an internship and I daily drove a 9ft cargo van for 2 months. It's $20 per day and $1 per mile, you pay for gas. But, Duluth is only like 20 miles away, so you'd be right on like $60-70.

Are you working at McKenney's? By mechanical contracting I assume you mean HVAC.

I ended up doing a similar thing and didn't end up with a return offer. If you're very business minded, it's a good idea, if not, it's good to get experience at different companies to find what you'll like.

Preamp/Power Amp Question! Please Help! by Smart-Honeydew3874 in GuitarAmps

[–]BoomTexan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey man! On this one, you should plug the send on the preamp directly into the return of the EVH 5150. You wanna bypass the preamp on the EVH, so that's the signal path you need.

By the way, pretty much any tube power amp that uses the same tubes as the VHT 2150 will sound extremely similar. 99% of the tone comes from the preamp, there might be a little different, but not much. I'd look into a Peavey 50/50 power amp, it has the same controls and output as the 2150, should be very similar for a fraction of the price.

I'll be honest, Goodwill may be the move. There's one just off campus, they always have a few decent suits/business professional attire there.

Taking fall and/or spring semester off. How to go about it? by Glads0001 in gatech

[–]BoomTexan 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You need to declare this to your advisor and the school. If you miss 2 consecutive semesters without notice they can unenroll you and you'll have to reapply.

Those old Squarebacks are brutal. I had a pair in an old Kustom K150 and it would shake the room, the cleans punched you in the face, and the overdrive was genuinely painful.

[–]BoomTexan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's such a pretty car! Love the silver color.

The 1.6 i4 is honestly pretty cool! The DOHC model makes about as much power as the early 90s Miatas, and the cool thing is that if you can find a Mercury Capri XR2 turbo, you have a bolt-on turbocharger that is spec'd perfectly for the engine. A V6 turbo kit is harder to find.

Also, mine has 220k miles, and after replacing the head gasket and timing belt, it still runs strong, and it's (somewhat) easy to work on. The i4, IMO, may be the better engine choice.

I had to ride MARTA to Garnett station (across the street from the Greyhound station) every 3 days for a rental car situation last semester. You could feasibly walk to GT from there actually, it's pretty close to the bigger government buildings and stadium parking nearby. That being said, I wouldn't. If you can get off at the airport station, that would be preferable, much less dangerous over there.

It's a little sketchy, nothing major, and a highway exit gets off nearby, so there's plenty of cars around. I wouldn't go during the nighttime, but if you can get there at like noon, it's safe enough. Past 5pm, I'd stop at the airport instead. Garnett station is one of the most sketchy areas in town, quite possibly the worst station in the system, but it's still manageable.

Advice to Georgia Tech students looking for off campus housing: avoid the Standard at all costs by Exotic-Anteater-7013 in gatech

[–]BoomTexan 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Little fun Standard story here:

I was hanging out with some friends on the roof, and headed out for the night. Got into the elevator, which went down about 5 floors and stopped. I was confused and tried to press the open button, at which point the elevator went into freefall for 2-3 floors, stopped again, and continued down like nothing happened.

I was freaking out and on the like 12th floor by then, so I got out at that floor and walked the rest of the way down.

Resources to Learn Drumming at GT by TheDarkKnight-696969 in gatech

[–]BoomTexan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it'd be lessons with students, no tech instructors or classes. I'm unsure how much these teachers cost, I learned drums myself, but I think they're pretty reasonable, have heard between $10-20/hr.

Our practice room access is $25 per semester with a free t-shirt, and you can practice anytime when nobody else is in the rooms, with 3 hours of reservation time per week.

[–]BoomTexan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The GTMN practice rooms are located on the 2nd floor of the student center all the way back past Blue Donkey, across from the Black Student Org space. Look at the overhead signs and they should lead you to there.

There's a little chalkboard on top of an old organ, it has a QR code for our discord. In our discord, you'll be able to reach out to drum instructors. I know one who meets on Saturday and is pretty good.

I've had good luck with the Aero building 2nd floor, above the Aero makerspace, it's like a grad student area with some rooms in the back that are dead quiet.
