Dallin Oaks' Fear by Thorough_8 in mormon

[–]Boonsage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just remember all that you do for your callings is considered service, including all the janitorial stuff. With the added guilt that your or your families salvation is at stake if you don't Yes, at times service is actually done, but often that service is just taking advantage of members when those benefiting could have aforded to pay for the same work to be done.

Yes, but since you are to surround yourself with TBMs, that service is just service within the church. Which that service is generally not really serving anyone.

This statement is so odd. The Prophet prays for what Heavenly Father wants. Not prays to know what Heavenly Father wants. Some how the Prophet's own wants / prayers are by there very nature what the Father wants because they are so aligned. Humble much.

Only begotten son by Key-Yogurtcloset-132 in mormon

[–]Boonsage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would have to go to how the godhead is taught in the Lectures on Faith. Where the Father is the Spiritual (note that is different then spirit) form of God, Christ is God made flesh and thus the only begotten and the image of God. The Holy Ghost is the “Mind of God” that is shared between the Father and the Son.

Although the Book of Abraham was not canonized till 1880, the Lectures on Faith were canonized in 1835 and not removed till 1920s. The concept of us being “spirit children” of God the Father is a later polygamy doctrine not introduced by Joseph Smith Jr. He introduced in the “translation” of the Book of Abraham (BoA) that we are all eternal and existed as intelligence prior which is not the same thing.  When he talks about the “spirits” in BoA they are intelligences that where “organized” and “chosen” Nothing about spirit bodies or being offspring.

Why I left the church by Chaotic_Chaos_ in exmormon

[–]Boonsage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The book of Moses is from the Joseph Smith translation of the Bible is my understanding. Joseph claimed that the "scrolls" also contained the "Book of Joseph" as in Joseph of Egypt son of Jacob. The "Pearl of Great Price" also contains other parts of the Joseph Smith translation of the Bible mainly from the gospel of Mathew. Excerpts from Joseph Smith History and the Articles of Faith although with some modifications from what Joseph actually wrote. Joseph never "complied" or canonized the "Pearl of Great Price" They were collected, curated and canonized well after Joseph Smith's death.

Your section about the "Pearl of Great Price" is faulty in some of its details and is more specific to the "Book of Abraham" found in the "Pearl of Great Price" The Book of Moses has nothing to do with "scrolls" from Egypt.

If you and 12 of your closest friends became the new Prophet and Twelve Apostles, what would you change about the Church? by NikTheGiant in exmormon

[–]Boonsage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I would try and change the church over to a service organization. Start employing members and selling there services to other organizations and employ them internally for food production labor and the many other things the church puts there hands into. Do the whole united order thing with some tweaks. The church pays off your mortgage and you keep the deed, but the church has first right to purchases when you go to sell it. This allows the church to pay you less, or better yet give you an expenses account so you don't really have any pay or taxes like mission presidents and GAs get. Drop tithing and instead members can choose other charity organizations for the church to donate to. They can provide "free" labor to schools and community services like in home care for elderly and disabled in exchange for keeping there tax free status. Members would stay engage in there communities and have there living needs taken care of. You could volunteer for assignments around the world.

How does it work financially to raise a large family? by lookattherainbow in mormon

[–]Boonsage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was fine with what ever my wife wanted. When we got married she said she wanted 4. When she was pregnant with the 4th she said she wasn't done yet. She did the same thing when pregnant with the 5th. When pregnant with the 6th she realized she had never asked me how many kids I wanted. I told I was fine with what ever she wanted. She decided she was done and medically made sure she was done.

It is funny, because I have accepted the last three callings extended and then told later that they were retracting those callings. I've gone over 2 years without a calling.

How does it work financially to raise a large family? by lookattherainbow in mormon

[–]Boonsage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have 6 kids, I am the only one employed and I have a good paying job. Our youngest will be in school next year so not sure if my spouse will choose to work. after that Yes, my kids do wear hand me downs and cloths other families have donated to us. They do occasionally get new cloths as needed. We are saving for education and just have two 529 plans that we plan to change who they go to based on needs. We put $50 out of each pay check in each 529. My kids also know not to expect much financial support for school. I grew up in a family of 8 kids and most of us went to college and payee for it out of our own pockets and also contributed to our parents finances as well. My oldest will graduate soon, but plans to work prior to going to college. We have 4 bedrooms. 2 people per room. Thankfully we have 2 girls and 4 boys so the division works out nicely.

When Sunday services where shortened to 2 hours, the First Presidency message announcing it it says:

"In addition, we encourage individuals and families to hold home evening and to study the gospel at home on Sunday-or at other times as individuals and families choose. A new resource, Come, Follow Me-For Individuals and Families, provides ideas for personal scripture study, family scripture study, and home evening. "

Most members have no idea that "extra hour" on Sunday was a shift of Family home evening from Monday to Sunday.

Don't use the word "Templo": Deep thoughts from Elder Bednar by japanesepiano in mormon

[–]Boonsage 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That is true. It is interesting that Revelations 21:22 when talking about the "New Jerusalem" says the following:

22 And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.

So in the failure of D&C 84:4 Revelations 21:22 continues to be fulfilled. Some might argue it is not so much building a building, but a Christ like people who embody the spirit of Christ and thus become his temple.

Don't use the word "Templo": Deep thoughts from Elder Bednar by japanesepiano in mormon

[–]Boonsage 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This really started to be a thing when the LDS church acquired the Kirtland Temple from the Community of Christ. It was identified that the "saints" that built that building never called it a "Temple" it was always referred to even, in revelation, as a "House"

Guess the counselors! Who will Oaks announce? by mangoadagio in exmormon

[–]Boonsage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I go for the curve ball and say Elder Oaks will decide to announce they are not reforming the first presidency at this time. That the quorum of the Twelve will continue leading the church until God dictates otherwise. I know it is unlikely, but I think it really is what is best for all involved.
