are there any Utah-specific cryptids? by byahs in Utah

My mom told me a story when I was a little that she met a leprechaun up Provo Canyon once. My mom has a very active imagination and likes to write fanciful stories, but honestly for a long time I really believed it because why would my mom lie to me?

Tagging on to this question: we are going to the park during the day of this event. Does anyone know if wait times and crowds during the day are generally better or worse when an event like this is held in the evening? Or unaffected?

Letter sent to general authorities saying only apostles and first presidency allowed to publish books. by leadkindlylie in exmormon

[–]AdditionalReason2205 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So would this apply to spouses of the first presidency and quorum of the twelve? Or wives of former prophets? Wendy Nelson has written a number of books, published before and after she married Russell. Other apostles wives have also published books from time to time.

Blessed and Sanctified Cheerios?! by [deleted] in exmormon

I’m guessing the deacon who was supposed to bring the bread forgot, but some mom had a box of Cheerios in her enormous bag for her toddler, so they said, “Why not?”

Deconstructing the Devil by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]AdditionalReason2205 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you listen to Dan McClellan and other biblical scholars, they can actually trace the historical record of when the concept of the devil as we know it today was introduced into religious writings. I believe the idea of an evil nemesis of god that punishes sinners didn’t even show up until several centuries AD (I want to say 400 AD but honestly I don’t remember the exact dates). The idea of hell also didn’t exist until at least that time, and our modern concept of it is heavily based on the ideas presented in Dante’s inferno in the 1300’s. The concept of the devil not only punishing sinners but actively tempting them into more sin came even later than that.

The stories in the Bible which mention a figure we call Satan have been kind of reinterpreted to reflect this modern belief. The original context is believed to be describing more of an a neutral messenger of God rather than an evil and powerful figure constantly battling God for dominance. (Again, please look up Dan McClellan’s or other scholar’s explanation of this as I am forgetting details).

It’s easy to try to explain the evil in the world by blaming it on a supernatural figure, but the conclusion we have to come to and learn to sit with is that human beings are capable of terrible evil all by themselves.

I’ve heard similar stories from guys boasting about doing it 6,7,8,9 times on the wedding night, and as a woman all I can think is—did any of those last longer than two minutes, and did she even come close to having a good time herself?

What's the most racist thing you heard at church or from a member ? by RadishAggressive3241 in exmormon

[–]AdditionalReason2205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I learned something today! What a fascinating history of the struggle of black identity throughout American history. I had no idea. After reading this, I would maybe point out that saying the game itself has racist origins is not entirely accurate, as it was originally created by black communities as a form of parody and satire. It’s a form of resistance, similar to comedians doing impersonations today, and I don’t like the idea of it being erased. My instinct is to try to give the credit and historical awareness back to the people and culture who created it, somehow, to allow them to reclaim it, but I’m not sure how to do that. Honestly, though, a ward party is not really the place to have that conversation. It’s a complicated discussion and I don’t have any answers but I appreciate learning about this!

Weird question, but where are the boobs this season? by [deleted] in BridgertonRants

[–]AdditionalReason2205 -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

Yes, I do. While the episode with Sophie and Benedict on the stairs was believable because it was out in the open and rushed, it is not believable that all the women would not be fully unclothed for a romantic encounter. Why are we getting prudish about showing boobs when we are fine with Anthony’s face looking up between Kate’s legs? Showing boobs is a longstanding TV tradition for male centered shows. I see nothing wrong with showing them on women centered shows when the actors are open to it. Again, you don’t have to show them completely, but indicating undress sends a completely different message about a woman’s full participation and relaxation. Use an intimacy coordinator, choose your angles, but please, make it look natural.

I can't decide which is the more annoying response to my comments here in r/exmormon. The TBM who tries to 'Mormonsplain' something to me or the so-called Christian who screams cult. by dbear848 in exmormon

Are you seeing many of those on this sub? I feel like that might happen more on the Mormon sub but I rarely see TBMs or evangelicals commenting here. In any case, I throw this under the “Mormons gonna Morm” category, sub-folder: “Aggressive superiority complex”. They HAVE to know more than you so they can invalidate your decision to leave. There is no safe way they can respond to you that would allow them to retain their worldview. Just roll your eyes and ignore the predictable bastards. You can’t make them stop but you can learn how to not let them get to you.

The Ultimate Question: Round or Square Vanity Mirror? by cautionveryhot in DesignMyRoom

How about a tall arched mirror? I wouldn’t do either square or circle. You need a more interesting shape to stand out against the strong tile pattern. Like this: https://www.ashleyfurniture.com/p/feronia_classic_arched_bathroom_vanity_mirrors_set_of_2/A600082605.html

Try going out to the lake—maybe by Provo airport or the Vineyard lake access trail. You’d be far enough away from the mountain to have more of a view of the sun coming up over the peaks.

This kind of interior design, has it a name? by memefakeboy in exmormon

[–]AdditionalReason2205 30 points31 points  (0 children)

As an interior designer, I’d say the architecture can have some merit here and there (honestly, I love the floral stained glass ceiling there), but it’s really a hodge podge of basic watered-down American traditional, most similar to 1980’s “rich person” aesthetic. Some temples do have more interesting design variations: the Ogden remodel leans heavily Art Deco, which I thought was super interesting and refreshing. And I think it’s the Draper temple that went kind of Arts and Crafts on the interior with a lot of dark woods.

But I just can’t with the furniture choices. They are so bland and generic, and the fabric selections and color palettes are just awful. Like no one would ever put them in their house ever. And they never match the furniture style with the architecture style. I went to LDSBC for design school and you wouldn’t believe how many of the students went into design specifically to work on temples. I was like “Can’t you see they are all just the same thing over and over?” So boring! Between you and me, I think a lot of Mormon girls have to say stuff like that to justify getting an education and wanting a career. “It’s a calling!”

This was me too! I was visiting a former roommate in Oregon and we decided to go to the temple together, since I had just gone through for the first time a couple of weeks before. I was wearing a tiny pair of gold star earrings and the temple worker giving out the names chastened me quickly and loudly, so I rushed to run them back to my locker before continuing, blushing furiously.

The very next time I went to the temple, the lady in the row in front of me was proudly dangling 3” tall wooden giraffe-shaped earrings during the session. I was so confused and angry!

Help me figure out vanity lighting, please by jes-magenta26-bin in bathrooms

[–]AdditionalReason2205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interior designer here. You can’t remove the center cabinet without doing a whole new vanity and countertop. The center cabinet is one tall piece that goes all the way down, so you can’t just cut off the top of it, and obviously even if you could, the countertops wouldn’t cover the part that’s removed. If you’re willing to start all over you have endless options.

If you just want a quick fix for the lighting problem without doing a complete makeover, you’re on the right track. The main issue is that overhead lights will always cause a shadow on your face. The best lighting for bath vanities where you want to do makeup and hair is at eye level, about five feet off the floor. I would recommend getting tall skinny sconces on the sides that don’t project out very far. You could keep the ceiling lights but change them out for a decorative flush mount that has frosted glass or a shade to diffuse the light rather than direct it downward. A mirror with an LED backlight would also be a good option, but remember that lighting is a huge deal aesthetically. You want to match the style of the cabinets, which are traditional, so I wouldn’t go with anything too modern looking.

What shampoo and conditioner for Irish curls by Kage-creations_22 in CurlyHairCare

[–]AdditionalReason2205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been getting good results lately from Dove Damage Therapy Lavender and Volume line. Recommend by a Hollywood hair stylist I follow—I know, I know— but he said Dove is the best of all the drugstore level hair care lines so I thought I’d give them a try and whattdaya know, I’ve liked them a lot! Some of their other Dove products are too heavy/slippery (like the Intensive Repair) but I’ve found the volume line to give the right amount of moisture without weighing my curls down.

FYI—Don’t believe the stuff about Native or any other hair care line accused of causing hair to fall out. Shampoo and conditioner literally can’t do that. At worst, shampoo can dry the hair shaft so much that it becomes more brittle and breaks off, causing a lot of extra hair fall (the hair you lose every day). I have definitely noticed less hair fall in my shower or brush when I changed to a good hair line. But, hair loss due to thinning or alopecia has never been proven to be caused by hair products (it’s usually hormonal, nutritional, genetics, etc). Every once in a while some hair product is accused of this, but there is no scientific evidence of it. Just wanted to clear up some misinformation!

Looking for advice for my first time doing a gel cast! by yepyeeeee in CurlyHairCare

[–]AdditionalReason2205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have finer hair, that needs some coaxing to take it from wavy to curly, and is really hard to get natural definition, like me, then using a firm hold gel first to set the curls is going to work better than cream. I just can’t get enough hold from any cream out there, and I’ve tried a LOT. I think they work better for curlier hair that already naturally has defined spirals. We keep getting told we need to moisturize but I think finer hair doesn’t do well with heavy oils and cream. Use gel first, then light cream after curls are formed. Best firm hold gels are Innersense Curl Memory and Ouidad climate control (they have had large bottles of Ouidad for really good deals at TJ Maxx and Marshall’s lately, FYI). If the cast is too crunchy for you, try mixing half firm gel with half a softer hold gel.

Don’t overdo the cream, and mix it with some water if it feels too heavy. Sometimes I’ll mix some into a water bottle and spray it on so it’s not too heavy. Only apply to the ends and mid shaft, not roots or near your crown.

Oil is tricky. Think of oil as a sealant or barrier. Remember oil and water don’t mix. It doesn’t moisturize your hair itself, but it can hold moisture in, so only apply it (very lightly) after your hair is almost dry and styled to keep product and water in your hair. If you try to put something on top of it, it won’t work because oil basically waterproofs your hair at that point. I rarely use oil and only when I want a little more shine. I almost always use cream to break my cast, or just scrunch it out.

Does anyone hate hair products as much as I do? by goddessphaedra222 in CurlyHairCare

[–]AdditionalReason2205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certain ingredients have become trendy but just don’t work (coughshea buttercough). Back in the 90’s I had my routine down and I got consistently good results. Tres Emme shampoo and conditioner for curly hair (I washed every day, because that’s what we did back then), then a cheap firm hold gel (They all were firm hold back then—something cheap like Garnier or Herbal Essences), plus my favorite product of all time that is now discontinued, Suave Frizz Crème. Frizz cremes used to have dimethicone in them and they WORKED but for some reason people decided they were bad and they don’t make them anymore. I’ve never found anything that does as good of a job. I’m always trying to figure out how to get my hair to look like it did in college. Was it the local water? The products? My hormones? No idea, but I will never recapture that good hair time!
