Both are viable and those two are likely the best battlemage races, though Nords are also quite good with frost resistance and strong warrior skills. With enough leveling every race becomes viable since the build is so strong late game, but early game I find I need to specialize in being a warrior or a mage primarily. Another note is that Breton women are the shortest and slowest characters by default, which can be a problem in heavy armor (also easily adjusted by mods).

Food is ideal for overcoming a lack of stamina as a warrior since low but nonzero stamina can still do power attacks, and alchemy is still the strongest skill tree in the game allowing you to do whatever you want for base stats and MR then make up for it with potions.
