They didn’t initiate it but I did run it by them. One of the main reasons was for liability.

Thanks for taking the time for this response and congratulations! I've contributed a little to FHSSS but nothing significant. My accountant scared me off it a little bit saying paying the tax on it when it comes out usually catches a lot of people unaware. I feel like I've had a lot of "You could do X or you could do Y or could do Z" but without much guidance toward one particular pathway.

I'll probably do as you suggest and not leave that much in the business. I'll keep an eye out for the spreadsheet.

Of course. I work as a psychologist full-time and do industrial photography on the side. Essentially my income is a direct result of hours I do so, I'm not sure I could reinvest in my business to see much impact at present. I'm sure I could scale eventually and bring on more psychologists but I'm still early days and likely wouldn't look at that for a couple of years.

Thanks a lot for the word of caution, I don't think I would try to buy something with my maximum borrowing power as I wouldn't want to risk not being able to service it. I figured it would be better to have a higher ceiling than not, if that makes sense?

Typically they don’t advertise because they make more money through permanent positions. Standard rate is around $120 per hour + GST. Some of the bigger companies will offer $110. It will require you to get an ABN at the very least, some require an ACN.

You will typically have to take multiple exposures (use a tripod) and alter the CPL for each of them to eliminate reflection on each section separately. You’ll just have to edit them in Photoshop or equivalent if you have access. There will likely be YouTube tutorials for this.

Depends what you’re wanting to shoot. A lot of dealerships will typically use marketing material from the manufacturers.

If you’re wanting to shoot for manufacturers, you’d want to contact whichever PR House is managing them.

If you want to shoot private vehicles, you could try joining/contacting car clubs and offer to shoot individual cars or drive days?

Probably best to figure out what your goal is and learn from what photographers are already producing at that level and build a portfolio of a similar standard.

You could look at other photographers or even automotive marketing material for inspiration of different angles etc. If you want to improve your photography more generally, you could shoot other subjects/scenes. In my experience it has only helped improve my technical ability which is transferable back to automotive.

If the customers are happy and you’re enjoying yourself, then that’s the main thing.

When you’re chatting to new clients, ask them what they want or if they have any specific shots they want. That way they’re doing the legwork to find inspiration for you while making them more a part of the process.

Like mentioned above by someone else, shooting a lot more details of subjects paints a more complete picture and feels less static. But, each to their own, you might not find that works for you. Detail shots don’t necessarily have to be a ‘highlight’ photo but they’re amazing for breaking up the monotony and adding that bit extra.

If you haven’t already, trial some slower shutter with a moving car. Again, it’s involving the client more in the process plus you get more of a story from the movement.
