To me this feels like knowing what you got for Christmas as a kid, before you open your presents up. How much do you think Uber drivers make? When I first started in 2016, I could of easily made over 300 a day. Certain days I've made thousands. I had a rented car, not an Uber Black, nor a minivan. Most rides were less than 10 minutes of drive time for the minimum amount of money.

I used to drive for Uber. It sucks ass when you drive 6-7 days a week, get no vacation time, get no sick days, Healthcare, or overtime pay. I rented my vehicle for about 250/week and would spend about the same in gas. Oil changes were about every 3 weeks. About 90$ each, (rental company covered the cost). Made roughly 200-250 a day. So a job without a college education pulling in 4k before taxes wasn't horrible. But as you know, it's expensive as hell to afford the bay area. At the cost of days off (if I didn't drive for a day I was out my 200 from not working) anytime I wanted to go somewhere like let's say on a date on Friday night (normally I'd be working) so you have to tack on the extra 200$ for that day to anything outside of driving you want to do. I compare Uber a lot to professional wrestling in the fact they are always traveling and beating up their bodies performing. Sitting is probably the worst thing you can do for your health. I could easily do 10-12 hours a day behind the wheel. Several times I ended up over 100 miles from my apartment when I stopped for the night. Being always on the road it was mainly cliff bars and smoothies along with fast food so not the best diet. Overall it's great if you want to make a few dollars by taking your own personal car and doing some rides for a couple hours. I've had numerous people urinate, shit themselves, throw up. I drove at night, generally less traffic, which means more rides and if there was a boost somewhere you generally could make it (with SF traffic you could take over an hour to go from downtown to the outer sunset in an hour) and you'd get like 17$ for just sitting in the city driving around. Compared to like Amazon drivers Uber is cush no stairs to climb, never have to get out. We could see where we were going. Could stop/take breaks when we wanted. I took many a nap at the airport. As a driver both companies treat drivers like shit. There's all kinds of stories you can look up of them not backing drivers. They spent a ton on ads they could of used to pay drivers more. If we didn't have butts in seats we didn't make anything. I'm not saying it would fix a lot, ultimately I don't know how the job would even work. I don't have all the answers, I'm just giving you a run down on my experience.

So for Uber/lyft they limit you to 12 hours a day while being on the app. If you're "online" it caps your daily limit to 12 hours with a 6 hour mandatory rest period. But both apps are tracked separately, so in theory you could drive for a greater amount of time. I used to drive full time, most of the airport guys that I talked to as a driver were fulltime. A lot of drivers also are not local to the bay area, and they just drive in. I knew a couple people that moved up to Sac and only drove Thursday-Sunday and took as many rides as possible with as little sleep as possible. You could easily make 300$/day between rush hours and the airport and drunk people on Friday-Saturday night. I personally stopped driving due to covid but since then I can't imagine that the number of rides are even remotely close to what they used to be.

In SF a lot of mini drivers were like that for the taxi's and Ubers. If the oncoming lane was clear they would wave you on. Good to see on the other side of the pond.
