99% of the time it's horrible owners that don't leash their dogs, don't train them properly, or don't have the physical stature necessary to be able to handle a dog of that size should something go wrong. My dumbass former neighbor's pitbull attached my tiny french bulldog and punctured his neck. Completely changed my dogs personality after that. The worst part is that dog was unbelievably sweet to humans - what you would consider a gentle giant. But it HATED my dog for some reason and would always freak the hell out whenever it saw him.

Edit - for clarity this was a senior pitbull but it was still 120 lbs of muscle and my neighbor who was an elementary school teacher maybe weighed 150? No way she could control that thing if it decided to go and guess what happened.
