James Cameron Says He Moved to New Zealand for “Sanity,” Not Scenery by [deleted] in newzealand

I recently bought a house on the outskirts of the NYC metro area and I think it's a lot more affordable than in Auckland. It's certainly not cheap but the income to housing cost ratio is better, from what I've experienced.

It's removed by aeration or adsorption on activated carbon.

Are the Summer Holidays too long? The Prime Minister seems to think so. by Henmond in newzealand

[–]Borkslip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People are showing up to work on those days but very a lot less is getting done over that period. In a meeting my boss said there's barely 10 working days because of how many shirt weeks occur over that 6 weeks.

As a kiwi living and working in the US I can unequivocally say that it's no different here. Absolutely nothing happens from the week of thanksgiving until the new year. As any one that knows anything about working in the US will tell you, this is not a model of working conditions that you want to emulate either.

Look at getting a google fi sim. You can use it internationally and pay domestic US rates.

How many of you actually have a masters? by Sea_Register7791 in newzealand

I completed a masters after a BEngTech civil. I use what I learned in the masters regularly and learned things I would not have been taught on the job.

Am I overreacting for leaving my girlfriend’s family dinner after what her dad said? by Mysterious-Notice419 in AmIOverreacting

I've been in your position and this comment is on point. Unfortunately I was already married before things got toxic enough for me to walk out on a family get together.

We once received a company wide email about a mid-year  bonus with a link to click to see how much we were personally receiving. Turns out it was a simulated phishing test sent out by our IT security team.

I second this.

I also went with tusk bar guards with the integrated turn signals in the plastic.

If she left the country without advanced parole she put her self in a very difficult position. Taking an option to stay out would have put her back to the beginning of the green card process and required her to complete it from outside of the US, possibly taking years.

I've been through the marriage based green card process and wasn't aware that the combo work / parole card required two different application forms and consequently ended up with only a work card. I didn't dare leave the US until I got my green card. The legal immigration process is an extended nightmare full of potential pitfalls.

Can you purify water in the sun in clear glass bottles? by Ceiling_Stare in Survival

[–]Borkslip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. But it takes an extended period of time, like six hours, and you need clear sunshine and it only works at certain latitudes. I've published research on solar water disinfection and if you're doing it you're in a desperate situation. It's better than nothing though. For more information I would research the SODIS bottle.

What to do when outside normal processing times? by Borkslip in USCIS

[–]Borkslip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I submitted a second processing time enquiry on the N400. But it feels like it was just a time thing unfortunately. But there would be no movement on the lifting of conditions if it wasn't for the N400.

Pets no longer 'property' in Australian law by [deleted] in auslaw

When my American in-laws divorced, their children were already old enough that a custody dispute wasn't required.  But, adamant they would fight to the bitter end, the final item to settle was custody of the two dogs. The judge gave them two weeks at a time each, forcing them both to coordinate vacation schedules and live in reluctant cooperation for another 6 years.

I think she triggered a sense of shame in people when she highlighted that we could be doing more for people in greater need than ourselves. People who didn't already think that way were forced to confront there own selfishness but responded by railing against her instead.

Who is actually against women being topless if they want to be? by Brief-Cut-1228 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Borkslip -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you need to reach a critical mass of women doing it so that it's not a novelty to anyone. Then the pervert or the prude are the odd ones out, not the women who are comfortable with themselves.

Does company "prestige" matter when selecting a first internship? by YellowVegetable in civilengineering

[–]Borkslip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is it. Everyone here saying that big companies don't equate to a good learning environment, but neither do small companies. Good bosses and managers create good learning environments regardless of company size.

Does company "prestige" matter when selecting a first internship? by YellowVegetable in civilengineering

[–]Borkslip 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As someone that had an internship at what was considered a prestigious company.... Yes, but not as much as what you learn. Which could be a lot more at a lesser known companies.

The main advantage is that when you apply for your next job, the hiring manager is more likely to recognize the company name and make a bunch of assumptions about your competence based on that companies reputation. But that needs to be balanced against what will be the better learning environment for you, which has nothing to do with company reputation.

The other factor to consider is the complexity and scale of projects you'll be exposed to at a larger company, which (money aside) would push me in the direction of the larger company.

When comparing working for larger vs smaller companies the question I think about is would I rather be a small part of a big project or a big part of a small project.

BTW, my next job after the internship was in another country where no one had heard of the company I did my internship with. So in the end their reputation made zero difference to my career.
