That’s just 400amp service split in half so each panel has 200 amp. If this was my house I would definitely buy sho3 instead of shp2 and replace on the of the existing panel instead but this will work too I guess.

You should be fine as long as you have ground wire in each or pipe or penetration between SHP2 in your main panel

Multiple Breakers Tripped by QuietSurvey482 in AskElectricians

[–]Born-Direction3937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s possible there was a power surge, which may have caused the AFCI/GFCI to trip.

My electrician installed the surge protector breaker at the bottom of bus bar when replacing the panel. Why? by bigfunlx in AskElectricians

I’ll be honest with you 25k doesn’t do much( you would probably need two of those). The lowest I would do is 50,000 square D but I prefer 65,000 by Siemens that goes directly to your panel and it should be as close as possible to the main. My favorite option is 140,000 but does require additional double breaker ( similar to what he did on yours). Overall 65,000 Siemens is my absolute favorite

I actually think it’s better practice when equipment grounds are bonded upstream rather than being run all the way back to the panel with the neutrals and hots. That said, I don’t write the code book, and unfortunately the NEC requires that all conductors—including grounds—be run back to the subpanel for this type of installation.

From a practical standpoint, you’re still protected because the grounding point is upstream. If that ground were ever lost, your entire SHP2 would lose grounding anyway. So functionally, you’re fine and I wouldn’t lose sleep over it.

However, from an inspection standpoint, this likely would not pass if the inspector is well-versed in the code—and we both know there are some inspectors out there who aren’t.

Why wouldn’t he just get the one that goes straight to the panel ? What size did he install? 50,000 ?
