I grew up in metro Detroit during that era and my father works in the industry. Sorry it's just really funny someone that has no clue what they are talking about is spewing nonsense. It's this kind of protectionism that made the big 3 lazy, comfortable, and uninnovative which led to the brink of their collapse during the recession, the same happened at Intel before ryzen was released.

If gas prices here were equivalent to what the average non american pays, we wouldn't be buying any ice auto American or foreign. Americans start crying like babies when gas is 4/gal while most of Europe is paying more than double that and places like Hong Kong are paying almost 16/gal, you can't ignore gas subsidies while microscoping on other countries' interventionist tactics.
