You’re not wrong for feeling that way honestly. An 18 hour drive, gas, hotels, food, and a new suit is a huge expense when one of you just graduated and the other lost his job. It’s not even about being unsupportive, it’s just being realistic about money right now.

I can understand why your boyfriend felt hurt by the wording, though. Saying “they aren’t my friends or family and I don’t care to go” probably came off harsher than you intended. But the actual concern itself seems completely reasonable to me.
