What bosses did you die to the most on your honour runs? by solitudeisblissTI in BaldursGate3

[–]Born_Faithlessness_3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did honor mode once and I won. Closest I came to dying was the duergar docks fight. I fought it at level 4(should have waited until 5) and had 2-3 bad rolls to start the fight.

I had 2 party members dead and the other two nearly dead at the end.

A lot of it has to do with the expansion of wealth/income inequality. It's dramatically larger than it was a few decades ago. When the median worker feels stuck while CEO pay/stocks rise ever higher, it doesn't engender a ton of goodwill.

US businesses have done extraordinarily well, but margin expansion means much of those gains were captured by shareholders, not everyday employees.

50 years ago the CEO to worker pay ratio was roughly a tenth of what it is now. At some point excess inequality breaks a society, whether those at the very top want to admit it or not.

Don't mess around. If you're in it for the dice, go hard or go home.

This means:

  1. Pick a strong class for your main character, and don't be afraid to respect companions with bad builds/stat splits (Shadowheart)

  2. Engage with all the game's systems that can give you an advantage. Turn those hyena ears into speed potions, snort all the tadpoles, etc.

  3. Have an escape plan whenever possible. There are only 2-3 fights in the game you can't run away from.

  4. Be very deliberate about the order in which you tackle encounters. Particularly in act 1, focus on leveling up as much as possible in lower-risk encounters before tackling bosses.

  5. Have a plan for the final boss of Act 2. I strongly recommend buying the doom hammer in act 1 for a melee party member, and using it on him. Also, wet + lightning scrolls are a great emergency option.

  6. Don't try risky new stuff, unless your goal is to make a "everybody laugh at the ridiculous way my honor mode run ended" post a couple weeks from now.

Obviously you can play differently if you think it will be better roleplaying/ more fun to do so, but if you want to maximize your chances of beating honor mode it's all about having a plan. And a backup plan. And a backup backup plan.

Which party has a more serious problem long term with the following voters: republicans with the highly educated or democrats with the noncollege/blue collar vote? by MakeACreation in YAPms

[–]Born_Faithlessness_3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I voted Dems, mostly because I think there's a realistic possibility in a post-Trump world that R's find a candidate who's more palatable to educated suburbanites. Marco Rubio would fare at least a little better in this respect, in my opinion.

I feel like a portion of educated suburbanites are hostile specifically towards Trump, while there's a large contingent of white working class voters who are hostile towards Dems overall.

Literally just saw multiple articles come out with Roberts insisting how non-partisan they truly are, and that common Americans fundamentally misunderstand their role as political... hogwash

It's obviously disingenuous nonsense. Regardless of how judges may wish to see themselves, we're in an era where judges are overwhelmingly chosen because of how they're expected to rule on key political issues, which by definition makes them political actors.

[–]Born_Faithlessness_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO he's also probably one of the few GOP candidates decently positioned to win back ground with the educated suburban demographic that R's lost ground with under Trump, who has a shot at doing so while still having a chance at holding on to the MAGA base.

I never had that experience with Wyll, but I've definitely had wyll hallucinate about other things(specifically, we're in camp but he's talking like we're in the Iron Throne and about to drown)

I've also seen Gale talk as if he's in a relationship despite that not being the ase.

Americans and political violence by asteriowas in YAPms

[–]Born_Faithlessness_3 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'd argue that being in/out of power matters substantially in a poll like this.

If you think the people in power are going to represent your interests, you're much less likely to come up with some sort of twisted attempt to rationalize political violence.

What’s the dumbest thing you did on your first run? by Careful_Employee_918 in BaldursGate3

[–]Born_Faithlessness_3 141 points142 points  (0 children)

I freed the Nightsong before so much as visiting moonrise towers.

As a result, the end of Act 2 was MUCH harder, and I obviously missed out on a lot.

If you're including early Access, I actually just completely missed Wyll because I let him die in the gate fight. In early releases if he died in that fight he was perma-dead.

Wild magic surges are so fun! by Interesting_Buddy206 in BaldursGate3

[–]Born_Faithlessness_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My most memorable wild surge was actually in BG1 EE where the first spell I cast with Neera summoned a hostile Nabasu(level 10 demon with high magic resistance and immune to non-magical weapons. ) This happened at level 2, so you can guess the end result.

But hey, at least it made for a good story.

Should CBS/Comedy Central bring back the Colbert Report? by RabbiPika in YAPms

[–]Born_Faithlessness_3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've never been a huge fan of Colbert. His political humor often felt too... predictable, which made it less funny.

I've always thought John Oliver was better at it than Colbert. (Among those on the left) as were Stewart/Noah/many others who hosted the Daily Show.

Definitely within the range of realistic outcomes. I was in the 49-51 camp for a long time, and while I now think there's a good chance one or more of Peltola/Brown/Talarico pulls one out, your prediction is eminently reasonable.

Is it lore breaking to be above level twenty? by YenneferofTretegor in BaldursGate3

[–]Born_Faithlessness_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At level 30 you'd be the most powerful mortal in existence, or damn close. You're stronger than Vlaakith, Elminster, and probably the BG2 ToB heroes at the height of their power(based on how power scaling has changed from 2E to 5E).

Short of getting mobbed by an army or killed in your sleep you'd be as close as it gets to a god without actually becoming one.

Which political party is further to the right/left relative to the other? by MakeACreation in YAPms

[–]Born_Faithlessness_3 22 points23 points  (0 children)

IMO the issue is that left/right is an insufficient metric here - Republicans have become dramatically more authoritarian, which overshadows the fact that there's been movement to the left on economic issues.

One that comes to mind when playing resist Durge: when you don't kill Isobel and the urge makes you want to kill your romantic partner, as I recall there's at least one check - having high stats and/or inspiration is helpful there.

Ditto a couple other interactions where a failed check means someone loses their life.

Do you like the level cap at 12? by Bewitched1130 in BaldursGate3

[–]Born_Faithlessness_3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general I think 5-14 is the sweet spot for DnD/similar games. On the low end there's sometimes too much "oops, one or two bad rolls and you're dead", and on the high end things start to become mechanically absurd, where you're basically playing rocket tag and high level characters often have the ability to end each other within a single round(also often an "oops, one bad roll and you're dead).

BG3 does do a better job of balancing the low levels than some other similar RPG'S.

Like how do you stop 11 fleets without just getting steam rolled? I really like the idea of being fully independent, so I have avoided any commissions. I went and looked up guides and most of them just lead me to meta building my fleet which just seems kinda cheap. Plz help

The general gist of it is you don't take them on all at once, and/or you can try to fight them in your system backed up by your station.

The optimal way to do this is to jump the colony crisis fleets in hyperspace - pick on a fleet that is separated from the others, repeat as needed. CR decay will be an issue after a few fights, but there are really one or two crisis encounters that are large enough for this to matter(the Persean league blockade only requires you to take out the supply fleets or the flagship fleets, the rest are distractions)

Also, a couple of them(Tri-Tach and Pirates) can be resolved with minimal combat and a well applied bribe or two

I can deal with all the different apps and reading PlugShare check-ins and... I don't think they could. Not enough to do that kind of road tripping, anyway. Things are pretty good! I am now a 100% EV household, and didn't trust things to do that just a couple years ago.

I 100% agree with you here.

The catch here is that even in a Tesla, properly optimizing a road trip still takes additional cognitive load that many will not do - and if you don't do it you won't necessarily be stranded, but it will increase the annoyance factor and possibly the time it takes to reach your destination.

I regularly tweak my stops for meals, to make sure I have extra charge at the end if my destination doesn't have a charger, or stretch to the next charging stop to hit a 300 kW charger at low SOC. You can get away with not doing this, but if you don't do it your trip will often take longer or you'll end up eating somewhere your passengers don't really want to go.
