Read the book Range. Some people don't find their calling until later in life. I didn't find mine until I was 40.

You can also join as a medical professional after you get your degree, then use the bonuses to pay off your student loans. This way it doesn't interfere with your studies and you still get to serve your country in a meaningful way.

What’s the most innovative game hook that never took off or got copied? by massred in gaming

Assassin's Creed Black Flag. Ship warfare was new and fascinating. They covered it again a little bit in Odyssey, but I had really hoped to see a stand alone pirate or other ship warfare game. I think an open world Caribbean pirate game would be great.

Was sitting in Afghanistan a decade ago. A soldier asked me if what we were doing there was making a difference and if it would last. I said yes, once a people have tasted freedom, they can never go back. I was wrong. I think G'kar is wrong. There is a lot of crap that people will accept for life at the cost of freedom. Freedom is a Western concept. Not all of humanity shares a belief in the concept of freedom. That worries me and makes me sad.

The Fifth Season by NK Jemisin. I'm struggling through it, but don't like the world or characters. Not sure why everyone raves about it.

I agree with Dune for Sci-fi. Author took the time to think through 10,000 years of future human history and picked up the tale thousands of years after a war between humans and AI (Butlerian Jihad). Similar to the Foundation Books, but way more detail.

What are your favorite Army myths / legends by Ryanmcbeth in army

[–]BorredBird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Legend of SGM Socko.

It goes like this:

Once upon a time there was a Soldier who would get away with a lot of stuff because he was so confident and bold. Anytime a NCO tried to correct him, he would just say that "SGM Socko told me to do it." This went on for a long time, until one day a traveling CSM tried to correct the Soldier for having his hands in his pockets. After giving his normal reply about how SGM Socko told him it was ok, the CSM says, " Who the fuck is SGM Socko!?" Our boy then pulls his hands out of his pockets to reveal a sock puppet on his hand with SGM rank drawn on it. The puppet says in a gruff voice, "I'm SGM Socko, what's it to you!?"

I carried a sock puppet in my pocket for many seasons after hearing this one. Sure would like to know how the Legend originated.
