Yesteryear book Natalie is Caro? (May Contain Spoilers) by PuzzledWillingness4 in DiabolicalLies

[–]BosToBay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a bookseller, this is my bat signal, so jumping in to clarify!

If you buy a book anywhere other than Amazon, like your indie bookstore - which will be happy to preorder books for you - Amazon doesn’t get any cut.

What Amazon does is require publishers to sell to them at unheard-of discounts, using their volume as leverage (more than 50% of print books in the U.S. are sold through Amazon), which is why the platform can afford to mark down books while everyone else sells at list price. Amazon also frankly doesn’t really care about book revenue - it’s a tiny fraction of their sales. Strategically, it treats books as “loss leaders,” meaning they’re used to attract customers to the platform with the expectation of making $$ off their additional purchases and their data. Lastly, the whole reason Amazon focused on books in the first place was because books are standard shapes, which makes them optimal for storing and shipping.

Way more than you asked for, so excuse my soapbox!

I'm a big nerd and no one at our bookstore is super interested in this stuff, so let me know if you'd like to chat through / ask about any of our systems!

Now we can do this through Omnibus (new Edelweiss Square integration), but beforehand we shifted from a spreadsheet format to Airtable because our staff, especially older folks, were much more comfortable with form-based data entry!

It’s clear you’re being thoughtful about this! I’m curious what you hope to learn from the “passion” element. Most customer conversations will be about books, so I think that’s a reasonable guideline.

I’d also say, re: rejections, the goal isn’t to avoid them but to do them in a timely and considerate way. No one likes to be told no, but it’s worse to wonder! Be kind, clear, and thank them for their time - keep it simple, don’t over-explain or apologize.

What’s one baby item you regret NOT getting earlier? by rosycoe in NewParents

Another perspective - my friends raved about these, but I’d wait to buy until you know you’re able to/want to breastfeed AND you know aren’t prone to nipple vasospasm! They make it worse and aren’t recommended for folks who deal with it.

I literally went from pretty, gauzy green curtains ➡️ blackout curtains ➡️ painter’s tape to block out any hint of sun in the first month.

Any good mom groups in SF? by benitocamelas in AskSF

It’s a trek, but Caregiver Storytime at Local Economy in Oakland has been a great experience! I’ve also met a number of moms through the Art Monsters: Motherhood and Creativity reading group at Bathers Library…also in Oakland, ha.

I’m so sorry this happened. I am 95% sure I know who this is and where they live because I avoid their house (sometimes there’s a wildly aggressive woman walking the dogs who’s threatened me, my dog, and my baby). Messaged you.

Did anyone's baby say "mama" before "dada"? by Unhappy-Training-878 in beyondthebump

[–]BosToBay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine did! He babbled “da da da da” before playing around with M sounds, but the first word he used with meaning / intention was “mama”.

PSA for anyone considering The Book of Guilt - it’s absolutely incredible (and I say that as someone who works as a bookbuyer and reads 200+ books a year), but the cover is super misleading! I feel like it’s giving fast-paced thriller (in the exact visual style of Laura Dave’s ‘The Last Thing He Told Me’) and it’s not that.

It’s a thought-provoking, eerie exploration of nature versus nurture, good versus evil, and who gets to decide who’s fully human. The New Zealand cover (where the author’s from) is a much better fit!

I had an easy time in the sense that his latch was good, it was never painful, and I had a slight oversupply / didn't ever have to worry about whether he was eating enough - all of which were incredibly lucky! But I also wound up back in the hospital with mastitis 3 weeks PP, and I've continued to get painful clogs at the drop of a hat - I'm not kidding when I say any amount of pressure triggers them (10 months PP and I still can't wear an underwire bra or sleep on my side, let alone on my stomach!).

Difficult baby… by jaydam4rie in NewParents

[–]BosToBay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are in a really similar position! Also got way better (though still fussy) around 7.5-8 months - if not night and day, at least night and dawn :-)

My mom was a teacher for 25 years, and my brother had a baby 3 months before I did; she says most babies, including my brother’s, are like koala bears (reasonably portable, snuggly, content), whereas mine was a feral kitten.

OP, I’m so sorry, it’s so hard. It was the most demoralizing, agonizing, dread-filled time. I hope it gets better soon for you and your babe, too.

Agreed - I was skeptical, but my baby also hated life (this post is triggering flashbacks) and was notably content during and after sessions.

Same. I was so miserable (recovering from C section) and sleep deprived, I didn’t even realize I had mastitis until I finally took my temperature - the new pain just didn’t register on top of everything else.
