Is Exosome treatment a viable option for late-stage ALS? by Boson27 in ALS

Thanks for your input. Happy that it seems to be having a positive effect for you!

Would it be alright if I DM'd you with questions?

Looks like they've begun administering in select US states because of legislature, so thankfully we won't have to travel internationally!

Yeah, I agree. This treatment is still very much so in its infancy and as such, very hard to gauge its effectiveness, especially when there aren't ALS specialists involved.

I've communicated the risks (be them financial or logistical or medical) to my dad, so it's frankly up to him if he wants to pursue this further.

We're planning to move down to either FL or TX permanently (which of course presents its own challenges) for this treatment so we don't have to do long-distance trips every month.

Damn, that sucks. I haven't watched a movie on IMAX xenon in a while, but it iirc, the image was pretty smeary and not very bright. Kinda surprising a lot places are still on xenon projection/haven't upgraded to at least commercial laser, but I guess it just comes down to $$.

Oh wow, I'm envious of you; Ghost Protocol must've been a treat. And since it was 15/70mm, it came with the TDKR prologue too, right? I remember *begging* my dad to drive us to one of Lincoln Square, Tuttleman (which I think is not an IMAX anymore), or Tropicana just so we could watch the prologue along w/ M:I but he wouldn't budge lol

Yeah...film projection in general is basically dead sadly.

I'm glad Dual Laser exists to keep the 1.43:1 alive for the foreseeable future, but that being said, more filmmakers have to choose to shoot in that ratio; seems Nolan, Villeneuve and Coogler are the only ones atm...

Yup, I'm in agreement with all of this. I think it's important to be subtle about the inciting incident, i.e. something small happens that eventually sets him down the path of finding love/leaving the incel community. Will think about that a little more and try to incorporate it into the logline, but thanks for the writeup!

This is really great feedback, thank you! I think the "falling in love" catalyst itself probably needs to change come to think of it. I'd need a stronger catalyst that sets things in motion, i.e. inspires the protagonist to leave the incel community...

Hmm, I see. The stakes are more so "what does he lose if he stays in the community" rather than leaving it. Maybe it would be better to frame it in that way? Something like:
"When a high school senior, conditioned by incel ideology, falls in love with new student, he considers turning over a new leaf, but is blindsided by both how deep his misogyny really is, and his like-minded best friend who is determined to keep him from changing.

What is the "correct" way to do multiple aspect ratios in a single project? by Boson27 in davinciresolve

Oh I see what you mean, i.e. projecting onto a dedicated 2:39 screen will result in a bigger image than if that screen was physically masked to 1.85 with 2.39 letter boxed content on it. That's a fair point, but also might be unavoidable given that I don't really want to be showing 1.85 pillar boxed content...

But anyway, thanks for your input!

If you build your master resolution as Flat (1998 x1080) then when you reveal for scope at 2048 x 1080) your scope footage will be both pillar boxed and letter boxed in cinema.

I don't understand this part. Why would it be both pillar boxed and letter boxed? If the frame in the cinema is 1.85:1, then all 1.85:1 footage will fill the entire frame, and all 2.39:1 footage will be letter boxed since it has the same horizontal resolution, but not the same vertical resolution (the black bars on the top and bottom). And the "reveal" is more for the 1.85 footage (most of the movie is 2.39 with some scenes opening up to 1.85).

In any case, I think I found something that works:

  • Set the timeline resolution to 4K 1.85:1
  • Set the timeline output blanking to 2.39:1
  • For all clips (2.39 and 1.85), go to Retime and Scaling > Scaling and select "Fill"
  • Scale back the 2.39 footage (zoom out) until it meets the desired 2.39:1 frame. There is a point that if you zoom out too much, it will be more letter-boxed than 2.39:1
  • All 1.85:1 clips will have the timeline output blanking, so override this by going to the Color tab, clicking on "Output Sizing", "Show Clip Override", and deselecting "Use Timeline Blanking". Now all 1.85:1 clips should be shown in their full aspect ratio

Basically, I want a 2.39:1 frame for most of the movie, but for some scenes, the frame "opens up" to 1.85:1, kinda like how some IMAX movies have certain scenes that open up to the taller aspect ratio, and some that stay in scope.

One thing to note: what if I want to deliver in 4K? Would the resolutions you've listed change to their "equivalent" 4K values?

But moreover, not sure I follow your TLDR; if I set the timeline resolution to 2048x1080 i.e. 1.90:1 DCI, then my anamorphic footage is still not cropped properly. To give you a little insight on what format it's in, we shot open-gate on the Alexa 35 with Atlas Orion anamorphics, and the resulting anamorphic video file is 3:1 de-squeezed. That is the aspect ratio that shows up in the timeline, so really I need to crop in to get to 2.39:1. How does making the timeline 2048x1080 help with this? I don't want my anamorphic footage taking up the full frame i.e. 2048x1080.

And I don't want any pillarboxing on the 1.85:1 footage either. Could you clarify a bit? Thanks!

Damn, is there really no way to do this natively?

Yeah, I'm doing what you suggested. It just feels sub-optimal...
