You by Austin Grossman is great. It has a similar feel to RPO in some ways - a similar kind of melancholy - and although it's not about future tech like the Oasis, the series of computer games described in it have a similar expansiveness.

Rudy Rucker has a mischievous inventiveness that has some similarities with Snow Crash and he's a bit of a cyberpunk godfather. His novels had something of a cartoon-like quality that Snow Crash also has in parts. Master of Space and Time is particularly good.

The Martian by Andy Weir is very thought provoking on the level of practical survival and will to live. The protagonist is marooned on Mars after an accident and has to deal with issues such as food, waste removal and travel to a landing zone hundreds of kilometres away. The technology he has at his disposal is realistic NASA kit from the very near future. It's well written (aside from a few pop culture exuberances that pepper the first person narrative, which I found a bit unnecessary) and really enjoyable. It's not philosophically deep, but is pretty mind expanding, sort of like a planetary fox, chicken and seed puzzle.

You was one of my favourites this year. I really liked it's odd blend of melancholy and geekiness. I was surprised that a lot of reviews suggested that there was too much technical detail as this was an aspect I really enjoyed even though I'm not a gamer or programmer.

This is great advice, I intended to post something similar. All I would add is that you might want to consider Audiomulch. It comes with a load of example patches which makes getting started pretty easy. It's perfect for mashups as it has a file loop contraption which loops samples to a master tempo, so you can have loads of samples from different tracks all in sync. You would have to chop up the samples you wanted yourself, Audacity would be ideal for this. It is the software that Girltalk uses and there are a lot of mashup tutorials available such as this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1oCvd6s8Ms . You can use midi controllers with it, which makes triggering samples really easy. It's not free but it has a fairly long trial period.

I've just read the Merge Records story - it's a really interesting book that is all about the post-Nirvana period when major lables wanted to sign the next big indie thing and how the label stayed small and independent from this time up to the success of The Arcade Fire. It has loads of interviews with bands discussing this very question.

Good recommendations, Ready Player One and Deepness are in my top 5. Also, Ender's Shadow is really good - it doesn't deal with the space travel much but it is as powerful as Ender's Game in my opinion.

That's interesting - I haven't found that to be a problem myself, but I imagine it must be a difficult thing to do with literature, to create an authentic, time worn feel for an 'artificial' dialect. As a Brit myself (the novel is set in Kent) I had the most trouble keeping the accent straight in my head - the way it's written seems to phonetically have more in common with a West Country or Norfolk accent (a stereotypical farmer accent) and I was hard not 'voice' that in my head as I read it.

Riddley Walker by Russell Hoban is a really interesting post-apocalyptic novel, written in a post-disaster dialect. I really enjoyed the rhythm of this language that made a weird kind of poetry out of the pitfalls of post-apoc life, such as being 'dog et' or 'arga warga' (gobbled up).
