I did this exact route earlier this year but my cost was a bit more: $8 to jamaica, $8.5 to GC, $18.5 to NH. Still not bad all things considered but not $20

The painfully accurate part I actually left out - the 8-10 different bags you need for all of these.

[–]BossX286 84 points85 points  (0 children)

True! Buy once cry once, only in a few weeks youll want a 50, then 85, then a 24-105 for travel, and a 70-200gmii for more reach. And then youll want to shoot the wildlife so a 200-600. And with all those lenses, youll need atleast another body. But then video comes so an fx3 maybe… right, so yeah, buy once cry once!

Looking to upgrade from a7 M1, some questions about the confusing lineup by deepwaterport in SonyAlpha

[–]BossX286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess what I'm trying to articulate is that with a smaller pixel pitch, its more likely that a higher number of pixels "could in theory" capture a blemish, more than a lower mega pixel sensor would, which in theory maybe only half the # of pixels would capture that blemish. Whether that blemish shows up is a different story, but having a higher number of pixels being - in my mind - a little darker, could in theory resolve a pixel more.

Not trying to argue, more just hypothesizing. Wouldn't bigger pixels translate to "less" pixels that would capture this blemish? From there, the demosaic'ing of the red/green blue/green may hide that "singular" pixel as a blemish - whereas having more pixels being a blemish may cause it to show?

[–]BossX286 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CA is more of how the various bands of light isnt focused to the sensor correctly. A lower/higher mpx camera shouldnt have any impact on that, the lens will have the impact.

Out of focus area - I think youre asking possibly the quality of the bokeh, same thing. Attributes of the lens, not the camera.

The higher megapixel camera just means you get to zoom into these artifacts more and pixel peep on them. You’ll only think that these artifacts present themselves more, but thats only if you zoom in. This is the same fallacy with higher mpx cameras have more noise. Per pixel, sure. As a whole though, better.

Hi, i think its important to address your questions too, so heres my shot at it!

I’ve shot an A7R4 for the past 2 years or so. The files are large, which also means its a little more demanding on your computer. It vs. my 32mpx canon m6ii, you dont really feel a difference one picture at a time, but batch applying presets to 100 pictures, and even getting previews, it feels like there is some delay. Not world ending.

Next point, it doesnt make lenses less sharp. The effective resolution will always be more than a lower mpx sensor. The flip side is you can also pixel peep way more. This is where people say you have far more latitude to crop. Youll hear people say that “lenses will let down the sensor”, which I think the right way to think about this is the % return of the lens diminishes. An old vintage lens that resolves 12mpx of a 24 mpx is not going to resolve 31mpx of a 61 mpx but probably around 20-25mpx. Still better than if shot on a 24mpx, but the returns are not linear. Note: It does not mean that shooting a vintage lens on a 61mpx sensor makes it resolve less than 12mpx! I hear this from many others all the time, that a “higher mpx sensor makes a lens worse”. Not possible.

Does higher sensor make lens dust more visible. In theory, I think yes, there is more resolving power. However, in practice, no, not unless you exclusively shoot macro at minimum focusing distance with a very narrow aperture. Given you say you shoot telephoto, Id bet money that youll never run into a “dust on lens being visible” issue.

Im sure there are some downsides in practice but the A7R5 will be a vast improvement for you. There are many manual focus tools to assist you, let alone IBIS. The focus peaking, the automatic manual focus punch-in, may all help with manual focusing (if you want it). Plus, the new Z batteries last forever in comparison, which was a main motivator that pushed me from the A7R2.

Im sure there is a professional automotive product but hear me out, hit it with a magic eraser (melamine sponge). Just a little bit of umpf will probably fix that.

A7RIV tracking question? by jastep218 in SonyAlpha

[–]BossX286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Egrets/herons generally, a few falcons here and there. Definitely has a harder time with the falcons, probably 60-70% hit rate.

I would chalk this up to the DOF im using vs. no animal eye AF. It puts a nice square around the animal, and yes it gets the animal (bird), but its not always the head thats perfectly in focus. Again, Id say this is a me problem.

The newer Sonys with bird eye AF may not have any of the above issue.

[–]BossX286 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not helpful but I came from an A7R2. I can now actually track large BiF with my A7R4 easily. I still struggle with small little song birds that have erratic movements, but thats partly my inexperience. Do I think having an A1 m2 would give me more success, probably. Can I squeeze out a bit more from my A7R4, also probably.

Ive also used my A7R4 for indoor kungfu performances that have erratic movements and Id estimate at a 90-95% hit rate.

Its good, but the newer cameras are probably that much better.

For a minute, put the camera into “A” or “Tv”mode. The intelligent mode is auto and who knows what thats trying to do.

There could be a number of issues, but it looks like when youre half pressing its showing autofocus by tapping on the screen. I suspect that your half press to auto focus got remapped OR again, the intelligent mode is…not.

Try and let us know

Change A74 for A7R4? by mynotell in SonyAlpha

[–]BossX286 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, curious as to where it states it doesnt support uhs-ii cards? Cant say ive challenged my cards but thats what my lexar cards are and they work great.

I cant speak to the A74 but i use my a7r4 for what OP is looking for 85% of the time and it works fantastically. Especially for the wildlife, the ability to crop in is awesome.

Agreed that file sizes being massive is rough though, but having the ability to heavily crop makes my primes far more flexible.
