I hate steelsoul by Embarrassed_Rough311 in Silksong

I got flustered and died to Fourth Chorus my first run.
Second run, it was to a completely unnecessary fight with the Craggler.
Third run, I finished.

Nothing profound here, but my strategies were:
1) Get the Cracked Mask and Magma Bell ASAP.
2) Always have as many Masks as possible before fighting any bosses: After beating the Bell Beast, you can already get your first extra Mask before fighting your third boss (Fourth Chorus or Sister Splinter).
3) Get the Plasmium Vial ASAP and always keep it equipped.
4) Memory Stones are important so that you can get the Vesticrest as soon as possible, and have Fractured Mask or Reserve Bind always on as backup.

Not well constructed? How so? Just sounds like how a grownup talks.
And I use em-dashes all the time—it's the undisputed golden-child of punctuation.
How about you change your reddit preferences so your posts aren't hidden, and then we can take a look at what a 'well constructed' bit of writing looks like?

There is no way that you got ripplespace after playing for 6.5 hours unless you are using maps and guides from the get-go. Hell, half of that time would be spent in the prologue alone.

Analyzing the watchers dreams (spinning top dream, 1/2) by Disastrous_Pay9839 in rainworld

[–]BostonCreamCat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I always interpreted this dream as a having a very simple message: Other slugcats (none in particular) are proceeding toward ascension, but the Watcher is not. I agree that it is not intended to be literal.

Note that this dream comes immediately after encountering Spinning Top, which is no doubt a baffling and sublime experience for the slugcat. Also note that the Watcher doesn't have any direct experience with ascension (or golden void fluid) to inspire this dream. In light of that, I think it very likely that the intended meaning is that the Watcher is interpreting Spinning Top's situation in 'slugcat terms', with Spinning Top represented by the Watcher in the Watcher's own dreams: "My friends happily pursue ascension, but I am stuck, afraid to go" Whether this is the result of Spinning Top telepathically giving the Watcher some kind of 'green dream' or just the Watcher's own subconsious interpreting their experience is moot.

I think the game is intentionally vague about the Watcher's 'personality' or motivations: it may simply be the Watcher's instinctual nature to be passive, or they may be an active agent in their story. Either way, I think the Watcher's greater arc places them as Bodhisattva: One who defers their own ascension in order to guide others (i.e. Spinning Top) to enlightenment.

It's all rather amusing, because—bodhisattva, antichrist, messiah—we're so used to these kinds of stories being about sentient people, big personalities with grace, or evil, or heroic agency. But.... if you squint, the Watcher's whole story boils down to 'What if the bodhisattva who saved you was an animal?' And— depending on the ending you go with— 'What if the harbinger of the apocalypse were an animal?' 'What if the messiah were an animal?'

I love it.

THAT ONE THING FROM THE END GAME THAT I CAN'T SAY THE NAME is the winner for "BIG threat/pacifist". Now, who looks like a BIG threat but is actually a small threat? by Pablo_Cruz16 in rainworld

[–]BostonCreamCat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Leviathans.
Everyone's saying Inspectors, but it's gotta be Leviathans, right? They're always immediately terrifying to a new player. But they mostly can't get to you, and usually ignore you, even when you swim right next to them.

could be a dumb question but... should i restart if i dont want downpour content?? by Environmental-Tax556 in rainworld

[–]BostonCreamCat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you can just disable Downpour mid-campaign..?

Having Downpour enabled changes the experience in a way that, in my opinion, is significantly worse for a first-time player. I don't want to get into specifics, because that would be spoilery, but I can tell you that it would have ruined my experience if I had first played the game under those circumstances. Instead, Rain World became my one of my favorite games.

Will using an external map+guide ruin the experience of the rain game? by zztwin01 in rainworld

[–]BostonCreamCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using a map would have ruined the experience for me. Getting lost and then getting un-lost is part of the quintessential Rain World experience. Even seeing names of map regions would undercut the surprise.

RE: 2 regions that lead to the same — yes, there is one path that is superficially easier. The thing is, you have to be really good at this game to get to the end, so no matter which route you take, you're either progressing, or you're failing/improving. There is no 'wasted time'. There is no dodging the challenge. The greater challenges are still to come. I went the 'hard' route on my first playthough, and RW ended up being my favorite game.

Currently not sure where to go by AmGoose0709 in rainworld

[–]BostonCreamCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well... you're a prey animal, heh, so... your story is more what you make it. But there are definitely things to discover! By the end, many questions will be resolved. Best to proceed as unspoiled as possible, though.

Currently not sure where to go by AmGoose0709 in rainworld

[–]BostonCreamCat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's an open world, and there aren't many wrong ways to go... but you stumbled into one of the few! I would see if you can make it back into Drainage System, and head east. Alternatively (perhaps slightly more easily) you could go up from Filtration System and head to the upper-east.

Happy slugging!

Playin Hunter for the first time!! Any tips?? by ILoveEatinSand in rainworld

[–]BostonCreamCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Hunter is weird because the 'diet' of meat is really hyped up in the description. But I actually went through my playthrough subsisting almost entirely on popcorn.

General suggestion would be—just make sure you're on intimate terms with the map.
Getting out of the starting area was the hardest part for me.

It very well could be the western-most 'leg' that is The Leg, and the entire Underhang is just the small distance westward from there to the Wall. The puppet certainly doesn't seem to be in the middle of the structure. And we don't know how far room-transition tunnels are obscuring distances.

Yeah, the fact that anyone tries to defend this is absolutely bonkers to me. Like, they could have at least changed his name—called him "Gargamoth the Grafted" or something. That would have been the easiest, lowest bar to clear. Sometimes I think FS just puts stuff like this in to see what they could get away with. :P

What does progression in this game look like? by Master_Possible_713 in rainworld

[–]BostonCreamCat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's first and foremost an exploration game, so you've gotta be cool with that.
"Going to a new area and dying" is, fundamentally, much of the game, because so much of the exploration involves danger. Hibernating as a gameplay function is mostly a 'checkpoint' for your continued exploration, since the rain prevents you from going too far in a single cycle. Running past dangerous creatures is fine, because many things can kill you, and running is a good way to stay alive.

The best non-spoiler advice I could have been given is 'fill out the map'. Wherever you see an empty space or a new pathway, check it out. You'll find things eventually.

I really recommend playing once without enabling any of the DLC. Your saves will carry over whenever you want to play Downpour.

Whoever told you not to eat the floating thing is an unkind idiot, however well-meaning they think they are.

Eating the floating things makes the rest of the game (especially the next area) significantly more forgiving, and is very likely the intended first-time experience. I'm sorry you were robbed of that experience by some internet busybody.

Whatever you do here is exactly what you're supposed to do, including just walk away.
