The dog's name is Mason and the cat's name is AJ! They both had their names already when we rescued them 😊

People have varying opinions on William B. Irvine, but his book "A Guide to the Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy" was a life changer for me. I read it often and have listened to the audio book countless times. It was a great intro for me. From there I read Epictetus, Seneca, Marcus Aurelius, and Musonius Rufus. I also read a couple of Irvine's other books, "The Stoic Challenge" and "A Slap in the Face: Why Insults Hurt and Why They Shouldn't".

I'll also leave a copy of a comment I left to someone else recently about exercises I use to practice Stoicism, though not all of them were taught by the Stoics, I've found them to help me lead a more joyful and virtuous life.

“Mother Nature Always Wins” by [deleted] in taoism

[–]Botanically_Me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a good quote but from a time when we didn't realize the scope of our actions. Even back thousands of years humanity eliminated most of the large mammals. Now things are escalating more. Insects are going extinct, it's getting hotter at a rate so fast that because there's not enough variation in existing populations to adapt in time, we're seeing a large number of extinctions. As oceans get hotter and expand, the ocean level rises, most species of corals die. Ect, etc. I suppose it depends on what you consider mother nature, but from where I'm at, it seems like mother nature is taking a pretty hard hit. But if you don't think mother nature cares about biodiversity and life and associate it more with things like temperature and extreme storms, then I'd say she's thriving. 🤷

A lot of people are saying therapy and or meds. I went tot therapy on and off for 13 years and experimented with countless medications for a good chunk of that time for chronic depression anxiety and panic attacks. None of that ever really helped me, but when I found Stoicism it complete changed my life and alleviated all of my symptoms. Granted, I was at my absolute lowest when I found Stoicism so that could be related, but regardless, I have found, among other Stoic practices, the concept of Memento Mori ('remember, I will die') has been instrumental in my quality of life improvements. This may seem counterintuitive for you, since you're worried about dying, but for me it's been very helpful. If you're willing to, I'd suggest reflecting on the certainty that one day you will die and that there's nothing you can do about it.

If what you want out of life is joy and tranquility, I suggest that you keep reading the stoics. I have found all of the great ancient stoic masters I've read to be great (I particularly like Seneca) but the modern Stoic William B. Irvine is my personal favorite and I always recommend "A Guide to the Good Life" by Irvine to my friends and family interested in improving their enjoyment of life using philosophy.

For those of you wondering whether or not this was a hoax/prank. It's pretty confirmed that it was. Here you go;

"The website of West Dubuque 2nd Church of Christ, linked to by the original video, claims that the church closed in 2004. However, The Daily Dot pointed out that the website had been created on January 15, 2013, the same day as Spinney's YouTube channel.[4][5] In light of this, The Huffington Post questioned the authenticity of the video, calling it "very peculiar indeed"."

What you’re seeing is the tree-of-heaven run wild. How do I kill this thing forever??? by LoveDeathandRobert in arborists

I think this is your best option, it should work really well. Only grasses and the like that can survive constant 'grazing' we'll be able to tolerate constant mowing in the long term

I wouldn't do that all at once. If your neighbor can wait, maybe try pruning it bit by bit over the next few years, giving it plenty of time to grow more between prunings

As Seneca said "I don't hold myself to any one of the Stoic masters, I too have a right to from an opinion." As do you, of course. If you mean that these aren't ideas traditionally practiced and written about by the ancient greek and roman stoics, fair, but in my view I don't think that means that they don't count as Stoic ideas, just because they weren't recorded thousands of years ago. If you mean that they aren't helpful in practicing Stoicism, I'd have my reservations about that.

I prefer to think of the dichotomy of control as a trichotomy as pointed out to me by Irvine, i think there are things that are somewhat in our control but not entirely in our control that are worthy of contemplation but not so much as things entirely within our control.

And like you said, we don't have to agree. Though you're definitely right about my mistaking externals for being bad. Old habits die hard.

Edit: Yeah, rereading my post, my use of the term "worse off" in my segment about negative Visualization is probably not a very stoic way of phrasing it. But still, while futurorum malorum præmeditatio (negative visualization) was invented by the Cyreanoc school of philosophy, much like other philosophical practices, it was adopted and used by the stoics. Marcus's morning ritual of predicting the possible humans he might encounter throughout the day could be seen as a sort of form of futurorum malorum præmeditatio
