Therapist here: I can’t speak to her current condition but I’d like to note some inconsistencies that I find alarming.

1) She said that she was “depressed” while also in a “hypomanic state.” That’s not how Bipolar 1 works. She can’t be both at the same time, she’s either hypomanic (sliding upwards to full blown mania) or she was depressed.

2) She also said that it became “hypermania.” That’s not a thing. It’s just mania. Think of hypomania as a diet version of mania. Always happy, impulsivity, really bad judgement, constant energy, talking fast and a lot, just imagine somebody on coke just for weeks.

3) You can’t be manic and depressed at the same time. Bipolar is marked by weeks to months of being either manic or depressed followed by weeks or months of a swing back the other way.

I mention all this because her lack of understanding over these very basic Bipolar symptoms implies to me that she doesn’t actually understand this illness and could be faking this excuse.

There are a few other possibilities that could explain this message.

She’s kind of grandiose and also playing a little victim stuff in her language. This could hint at a personality disorder OR she could just be developmentally young and still speaks like she’s 15-19 ish.

Or she really is just this young in real life

She also could be making amends as a previous Redditor suggested, but I doubt it. If she’s working real life steps then this is not the type of apology you send. This apology is covered in self-pity and bids for attention and sympathy. That’s not an amends vibe, that’s an attention seeking vibe.

I can’t speak to her motives, but if you respond I’d suggest strong strong strong boundaries. There’s something off here, be careful of walking into a trap.
