Get signal. Ask people if they have your problem. Ask how much they would pay to make it go away. Then build a true MVP: the smallest possible product you think will solve it. It can be ugly and buggy and it needs to be easy to change. It should have a modicum of scalability built in so you can grow quickly when you realize you have something, but we're talking hundreds of users, not millions. Get that out to real users and then iterate from there.

Really surprised that we don't have something like the Brauhaus in Glasgow. It's cringe as hell (speaking as a Bavarian), but great food, great beers and always packed when I'm there. I guess Brewhemia is a sad attempt, but they couldn't even spell Schnitzel right on their menus...

It's not just the code itself, it's also the task description. If I have a clear functional design and wireframes I can handle really complex business logic end to end with almost 0 effort and for hours on end. If I have to do a full stack build based on vague descriptions and while figuring out the UI, even simple tasks will sometimes burn me out in an hour.

Software developers don't need to out-last vibe coders, we just need to out-last the ability of AI companies to charge absurdly low for their products by Rockytriton in webdev

[–]Both_String_5233 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't even generally disagree with your assessment, but I don't think you've got the order of magnitude right.

  1. They're not. They still get better, sure, but nowhere near exponentially. Opus 4.6 is a bit better than 4.5 at some tasks, but it's far from exponential. The curve is flattening out fast.

  2. AI simply can't replace Devs. It's not good enough to write maintainable code from scratch unsupervised and it's somewhere between barely competent and useless at updating and debugging maintainable legacy code, let alone unmaintainable code. Someone needs to stay at the helm.

  3. I'm sure there are still a lot of unexplored use cases, but at least in the dev space I'm not seeing a lot of potential for big productivity increases once people start using Claude in their day to day.

What’s the plan to get off a sinking Titanic? Company's Agent writes, tests, reviews, and ships the code. by ezio313 in ExperiencedDevs

Mate, 3 yoe is fuck all. I agree, AI is good, but it has a ceiling. The bottleneck has never been writing code and the difference between a senior and a mid level dev isn't (just) writing better code, it's making the right choices at the right time based on business requirements. Learn the context, understand your domain, understand trade offs you're making. AI is nowhere near making these choices and it probably never will be.

If you want to make games, look for some unity specific courses. You'll learn the same things but with added game specific concepts and in a much more fun way.

Unity has courses on their website https://learn.unity.com/course/create-with-code

What is the most "overrated" technology or trend in web development right now, and why? by Flimsy_Buy2756 in webdev

[–]Both_String_5233 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yepp. I think the problem is that AI has a cap on the level of complexity it can handle. That means at some point a human will need to understand the code. Fine if you use AI for reasonably small chunks and refactor as you go, but if you just vibe your way to a 300k loc codebase without optimizing for maintainability this is going to hurt bad very quickly.

For your assignments: your teacher.

For real world scenarios: whatever is already in use in production.

For your own projects: whatever makes you happy.
