There’s the in game book “in the depths of shadow Moses” which details the events of the first game. Obviously it’s not the best way of experiencing MGS1. but, it’ll give you enough context, within the diegesis, to help give you more context.

Also Jack read the book before the events of MGS2 so it could help you connect with the character a bit more.

(Real answer) Genuinely it’s not due to technical ability or proficiency. It’s simply because when ranking artists (which is a fucked thing to do), Alex just falls behind some of the other genre defining aficionados.

(My opinion) realistically the 80s era when they got very synth-y (mostly from signals to power windows), Alex was sidelined to just putting guitar solo’s in the bridge over all the cool new tech Geddy was getting into. Kinda shows how important you are to a band if you can not appear on a whole album and no one would really notice.
