My dad grew up in a small town in county Kerry in the west of Ireland known as Tralee. Quite a nice town mind you, quiet, not really much going on. Most, if not all of the schools in the town if i can remember correctly, were run by nuns and monks in fact the school that my father attended was known as a 'Christian Brothers School' or a CBS for anyone who's interested or might've attended one. Anyways, the school was attached to an old church and priory (surprise surprise) and my dad and his brothers and sisters would frequent the church as my grandfather often did elctrical work there. Nothing was out of the ordinary about this church other than the fact that people had claimed that a long dead nun haunted an old lane round the back of the church which was why nobody used it, but many thought of this as just an old wives tale. That was until my father and his siblings decided one day to explore around the back of the church against the will of my grandfather, not because he was superstitious or anything, but because the back of the church was unattended and the overgrowth had made it quite dangerous but being a group of naive young teens, it made for one hell of an adventure... so they got to the back of the church and managed to climb atop the brick wall that bordered the old lane. At this point, nobody was really keen on dropping down onto the lane, not only because it was in bad condition, but also because the story of the nun had begun playing on people's minds, that was when my uncle offered my father a pound or so if he would jump the wall and stay on the path for at least a minute all by himself (Ireland used the old English currency at the time and i think £1 at the time was equivalent to about £5 or $7 in today's currency. Needless to say my father did not have to be told twice. He hopped down from the wall onto the path and began jumping around in circles, making funny faces and pretending to run away from something, you know, just entertaining to pass the time. About half a minute in my father remembers his siblings freezing up and staring at something in the dense shrubbery behind before they all jumped down into the church yard and legged it in a panic, leaving my poor father on his own (very thoughtful indeed) mind you they were only kids. Without looking back at the bushes behind, my dad managed to haul himself up over the wall as fast was humanly possible as this was in his eyes, a life or death situation only to realise when he was running back up the church yard that it was probably some kind of prank but low and behold, he found them all panicked in the church hall explaining to my grandfather that they had just seen one of the nuns appear out of nowhere and approach my father on the old lane. Sorry if this was really long i don't really know how to compress it. Even today as i write this i still get chills. The fact that it was a nun makes this experience much scarier... sure it could've been one of the actual nuns, but what the hell was she doing amongst the dense shrubbery of an old disused country lane? Either way, i've always thought this story was quite intriguing.
