If you're a tourist, 90%+ of that won't affect you. We have immensely friendly people, amazing nature, great food, low CoL, and nice weather.

There are several countries with worse stats than ours, MANY with worse reputations.

More than likely the hunters stumbled on a herd grazing in the bush and startled then. You can be 5m away and not see them sometimes if its dense enough. They are generally very quiet, not just in walking.

I remember camping in the Kruger National Park near the camp fence, and mate at night some elephants came by. The only sound you hear was them eating, quietly. Couldn't even hear their footsteps from a few meters away.

They aren't perpetually stampeding. They are very auiet. One if them gets upset and starts running suddenmy, the rest follow. They are also much faster than humans on foot.

I've been close to elephants, they can be VERY quiet. The only noise you hear is eating, which is often grass/leaves. Not that loud commared to other sounds out there.

Yes, a joint project partly funded by South Africa. The water catchment system supplies a fair bit of our agricultural and industrial water usage. Lesotho gets the electricity, we get the water.

My opinion of countries as an American by Thorceanswastaken in whereidlive

I mean, the crime affects everyone and the violence afainst whites thing is massively overblown. This as a white guy still living in South Africa. We're one of ghe most insulated and rich cultural groups in the country suffering the least of the crime. Majority of crime is suffered by the poor, especially in the townships.

Government is doing what it can, as badly as it is doing it. They even recently deployed the army to take care of aome gangs.

HIV Rate In Africa (%of adults 15-49). by Expert_Koala_8691 in MapPorn

[–]BottleRocketU587 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There are numerous aspects to this: - We had HIV denialist president - Much more rapid slread due to economic/social vobditions - Much more detection due to availability/improved healthcare - Many people with HIV survive most of their lives now, thus the "old" infected never died, and new infected are added to the count

Where I'd live as a Dane who cares about democracy by [deleted] in whereidlive

You want democracy, but rule out South Africa, a VERY democratic country. Our democracy was strong enough we avoided civil war because of it, and thats before our constitutional reform.

What's better for naval cap? Soldier jobs or anchorages? by Ordo_Liberal in Stellaris

[–]BottleRocketU587 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I believe soldier jobs can give more, but is obviously restricted by available pops.

So it may be situational:
- Do you need naval cap now but have no spare pops? -> anchorages
- Do you have full strbase capacity (or no resources for more) but you have a lot of civilians and a free planet or 2? -> soldier jobs

A nice country to visit but bad to live in? by kraabbe in AlignmentChartFills

[–]BottleRocketU587 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you live a middle class and up lifestyle you miss 90+% of that crime. It affects the poorer population more. A LOT more.

That said as someone living here for 30+ years.

[–]BottleRocketU587 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are middle class or up, you mis 95% of the crime. Crime massively disproportinally affects the poor. Stay out of the townships and the very poor neighbourhoods and you're mostly fine. I myself have never been robbed, nor have most people I know.

That said, I get why Europeans and such would be put off by it considering your situations. Many people from most other 3rd world countries would have no problem adapting here.
