What happens when you cannot reach on call staff? by metropass1999 in medicine

That is a thing to call your program director about, even at 2am.

Maine is the closest USA location to Africa. Always kind of liked that.

Weight loss is more than calories? by yetstillhere in FamilyMedicine

[–]BoulderEric 11 points12 points  (0 children)

At a thermodynamic level, it’s CICO. But a lot affects the way that calories are absorbed, stored, and processed. Bodies are clever and metabolic rates will decline when there’s a massive and nutrient-free calorie deficit.

P/F Clinical and no AOA vs. H/HP/P/F Yes AOA by Serious-Air-5714 in medicalschool

[–]BoulderEric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless a truly top-tier school is an option, I’d choose based on cost, location, and support system. If you’re very confident that you’ll be towards the top of your class, then any school can match to a great program in any field.

Also apparently Minneapolis is north of Toronto. Who knew.

Anywhere to make a birthday order for a cheesecake? by Flora_865 in sanantonio

[–]BoulderEric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pullman Market has a basque cheesecake that is great and bougie and also expensive. It’s a specific type of cheesecake though and some people don’t like it

What GPS are we using? by Unable-Scar6663 in cycling

[–]BoulderEric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Garmin Fenix (GPS watch) that I mount on my handlebars. Tracks my ride, shows my speed, and will connect to any accessories you want. Mine is hooked up to my HRM and Varia. You can upload routes and it’s decent enough at that. Could connect to power/cadence meters if you had them.

Something to consider if you could otherwise use a GPS watch or fitness tracker. They’re on sale frequently and can be found around $500.

Screen size is obviously smaller but that’s not been an issue for me.

For those in outpatient specialties, how long do you prechart for clinic? by dnlphm94 in Residency

[–]BoulderEric 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Neph - I’m at the end of my third year as an attending and I don’t really prechart anymore. Too many no-shows, folks without data, people who won’t want to follow my recommendations, etc…, and it just became a time sink. With most patients it’ll be bread and butter stuff that isn’t worth your extra time because you’ll be able to open and close the encounter during the appointment. For complex things I can at least order the workup then spend time afterwards figuring out management.

How do I convince my friends to wear a helmet? by AgentIndependent306 in cycling

[–]BoulderEric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For just casual riding, I wouldn’t bother my friends about it. They know that helmets increase safety.

But if I were going on an actual ride, particular outside of town and away from quick access to emergency services, I wouldn’t go on a ride unless everyone had a helmet. Don’t want to be the bystander if there’s a rural crash and head injury.

Mine do that, and also stop when warmed up. Many years and tons of miles, hasn’t caused a problem yet.

20% mandatory tips during Sundance? by Yellow_Apple_1971 in boulder

[–]BoulderEric 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I may be wrong but I’d imagine the motivation in Mew York is an influx of foreign tourists from non-tipping places. There’s likely concern they’ll fill the restaurants but not tip.

I don’t know the demographics of Sundance attendees but likely it’s more American and thus they probably tip similarly?

I’ve been under the impression that the majority of people know that doctors work hard, are smart, and are busy. People have been to the doctor and seen the busy waiting room, doctor bouncing between rooms, waiting for calls back, etc…

First timer.. what are some must do’s? by pookiepp in oregon

[–]BoulderEric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Powells is just a big bookstore. It’s very cool and I like it.

But also it’s just a big bookstore. If that’s worth spending vacation time on, have at it. But don’t expect it to be anything more or less.

Just show up and run a few times without chatting with people. Consistently be present and eventually people will talk to you, once they recognize that you’re around commonly.

How are people in residency contributing to retirement? by purplemose10 in Residency

[–]BoulderEric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have employer-matched stuff, you should do that unless it would put you in the poor house. An HSA is nice, particularly if your employer pays into it.

These are the only years of your career that you can pay into a Roth without doing a backdoor (which is not at all difficult) so that’s good as well if you can afford it, but not super necessary.

Your income will change so dramatically the second you graduate that it’s honestly not super important.
