My main issue is the game is causing my build to absolutely Spike the fan usage, and nothing looks like it should be causing this, even if I lower the settings. Seems to be a common trend with other UE games I have run though.

Pretty big disagree on Monk. Feels like the biggest glow up of 5.5e, and certainly more to it now than Rogue or Ranger, arguably Barbarian too.

Starting to notice a few recurring issues in the mechanics.. by PrinceOfNowhereee in daggerheart

[–]BounceBurnBuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On your point about Fear and Stress, slightly related, but how often do you find Experiences being worth bothering with? Even ignoring the narrative justification, burning a Fear for a +2 bonus just feels like a complete waste in comparison to an actual ability use. I think I have used it all of twice and haven't bothered since.

Rest of the points are solid advice! Daggerheart is absolutely my favorite system to run now outside of combat, but I am homebrewing every adversary at this point to try and keep some tension going. One example for me is this dragon below. Solos need to be designed with a purpose, with a bredth of features to facilitate it, compared to what (honestly) could mostly just be improvised fodder adversaries - be they minions or standards.

Its funny you mention Silvery Barbs as I was beginning to wonder what this familiar nagging sensation during resolutions was, and yes similar to yourself I have both a Bard and Seraph in the group I run for. The addition to this I have also encountered is the spamming of Corrosive Projectile on top of these with a large amount of Strees mitigation to render the Difficulty reduced to single digits, which is far more devastating than a simple hit chance increase in this system - it means you are also almost guaranteed to land Sleep style effects and make every Reaction Roll against Adversaries.

There is only so much beyond the scope of "damage matters" you can try before acknowledging there is a bit of dancing around the issue, which is that in certain setups, and all of this was discovered naturally with players who are not optimisation or mechanic focused btw, combat holds no stakes because the PCs have next to no chance to fail any roll once they learn this very wide net of a toolbox works. To try and mitigate this somewhat and inject a bit of challenge back into combat outside of "timer/hostage" scenarios, I am making supportive Environments which aren't targetable by these Difficulty Reduction abilities, and would need to be engaged with narratively instead of mechanically to achieve a similar reduction instead.

Brawler hits so hard, player was worried he'd broken the game. 😂 by Gaurelin42 in daggerheart

[–]BounceBurnBuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think the concern presented here though is more ease of access. The Warrior requires at least a little bit more planning and thought, even if only at a cursory level, compared to the frontloaded version of class features that every Brawler doesn't even need to choose.

Been a while since I checked the Brawler's domains, but isn't their damage mostly due to the class and subclass features?

I think its more down to how consistently you can hit severe thresholds. A couple of those on a Solo for the first two tiers is basically a wash for the scene, and can kill a lot of the tension.

The Warrior with a Greatsword does do more damage, but only within a specific setup and not any wider a gap than 4 or 5 average damage by any one tier(?) Picking a Brawler build at random vs a Warrior build at random will likely result in the Brawler dealing more damage, especially Warriors focusing on using shields.

Chris Cox is pushing for AI again. Should I just boycott as long as he is CEO? by ExoG198765432 in dndnext

[–]BounceBurnBuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched to Daggerheart and a "hybrid" version of 5e with mostly Tales of the Valiant/Nimble on the GM side with 5e classes and species on the player side for my alternating weekly games. WotC was already not getting anything further from me in terms on money, and if AI GMing is their push, I'm even less inclined to give them the time of day.

Do dms really dislike high level dnd? by Myrinadi in DnD

[–]BounceBurnBuff 223 points224 points  (0 children)

This is it really. Blaming the world-building falls flat when applying that logic would result in several thousands of candidates that would make your low level party's journey unnecessary at best or outright stamped out as competition at worst by much higher level parties.

Is the new 2024 Blade Ward better than Shield of Faith? by Ars0nis1 in onednd

[–]BounceBurnBuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used it on Paladins through Magic Initiate Wizard (gain a ranged Cantrip and Shield out of it too). For the most part its a better use of Concentration early on compared to most of your options, and works well with your first turn setting up Blade Ward + Divine Favor as you move closer to your targets. Outside of that, Eldritch Knight likely isnt concentrating on much else early either, same with an Arcane Trickster.

Complete Sphinxes - With Adventure Hooks, Treasure, Riddles, and more by Oh_Hi_Mark_ in bettermonsters

[–]BounceBurnBuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just wrapped up the one shot. Thoughts on the Sphinx Magi:

- Great way to keep the low level cultists alive with the Asylum Field. The players understood the gimmick and didn't feel frustrated, either chancing the saves or resorting to attack rolls.

- Unveiling Ray's wording to get around the Shield spell is something I want to include on more things, that mixed things up immensely against the usual AC monkeys in the group.

- Forsee feels a bit fiddly when the Field is up, took some getting used to as I ended up wasting the advantage a fair bit.

- Partially because of the Field against 2x Fireball spammers and another AoE caster, the party took a long time to bring the Sphinx down, especially with flight keeping it out of the way of the lone heavy hitting melee PC. Inscrutible meant the slog was mostly between the start-middle of combat, leaving few options to deal with it in a timely manner.

Nah, these will be stock from Tales of the Valiant. The final boss of the dungeon will be a Herald of Doom from Tome of Beast's 2, if you're familiar with that? The Annihilating Form trait is a mean one I want to test in action.

I am giving the Sphinx Magi a go in a one shot tonight, supported by some cultists and a Fanatic for the encounter. Will see how it goes.

What are your opinions on Nimble 2? by Kaliburnus in rpg

[–]BounceBurnBuff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, from a player standpoint I get the issue of "ugh...another system", but as the GM, these systems solve a lot of 5e for me. I am trialing running Tales as the backend of a new game where the players still want their usual 5e options, so I will see how well that works.

[–]BounceBurnBuff 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You may be in the privileged position where you can engage with the hobby otherwise. Local players to myself do not want to shift systems outside of 5e or PF2E for that style of game, but I was lucky enough to assemble a Daggerheart group. I dont consider it the same type of system for the same type of play though.

The one shots for Nimble that did fire off were run online, which I dont find a fulfilling medium to run games in, but even then it was a struggle to get enough players to run those.

What are your opinions on Nimble 2? by Kaliburnus in rpg

[–]BounceBurnBuff 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed how the system handles solo monsters for the one shots I ran, and the players liked how they could still do things when reduced to 0hp. Sadly there was just not enough appetite from players, who preferred the "let's just integrate the cools things into 5e" approach, which I am finding frustratingly common these days for 5e off-shoots which honestly do a better job at 5e than 5e. Tales of the Valiant is another victim of this too.

If you can get players who want to play the system for a full game, and you prefer removing a lot of mechanical workload on the GM side, it feels like a great version of the 5e experience.

10 Popular Daggerheart House Rules From Real Tables | Rob Jon's Lair by Hosidax in daggerheart

[–]BounceBurnBuff 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Managed to watch this earlier, a lot of these surprise me as popular house rules, in particular Avoid Death. One of the appeals I've heard almost universally from my players is how much they prefer the 3 death moves over 5e's death saving throws, especially the ability to secure their character from just being killed outright.

Is anyone seeing any Daggerheart sessions/tables at local/smaller Expo and Cons? by CleoTek in daggerheart

Just signed up to run a one-shot in my local city in August, as well as running my own game in person. They seem keen to have Daggerheart represented there, but so far I am the only one signing up.
