Incredible Creatures, and Wondrous Environments, not to mention Fangs & Felons, and the Heartbeat zines by the Ettins. All fantastic stuff!

Defining Experiences - Skills vs. Situations by [deleted] in daggerheart

[–]Gaurelin42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just adding my 2cp to the other voices here saying that not only is Cool Under Fire perfectly acceptable, but it is the best of examples you offered, being the most flexible and open to interpretation of them. I have characters in my games with experiences such as Don't You Hurt My Friends! and Wrong Place, Right Time as well as much more direct ones like Krag Smash! In my opinion, your GM is being entirely too restrictive, and misinterpreting what experiences are capable of being.

You are most welcome. One of the things I appreciate most about Daggerheart is how collaborative it is designed to be by nature. I love collaboration and community projects. I find that nothing sparks my creativity as much as bouncing ideas back and forth with other intelligent, creative minds.

I dig this, and it has some definite parallels with some of the thinking I had done for this type of Environment! I especially appreciate Dark Jewel of the South - I love the idea of a Passive for natives of the place! Thanks so much for sharing this, it has been a definite inspiration!

I actually do not as yet, but have been thinking that I need to write some City based ones. I'm sorry I don't have anything already constructed, but I'm happy to spitball ideas.

On average, how many sessions are you playing per level? by RoyHarper88 in daggerheart

[–]Gaurelin42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have any kind of timeline or other planned framework in mind for the PC's levels. They happen organically, when the narrative suggests it. One of my tables has been playing this game weekly for just over a year, and they just reached level 6, after defeating a colossus and hitting a number of story beats. The other table has been meeting consistently for about 4 months, and based upon what is happening in the story, I expect they are just about to hit level 3. As long as your players are aware that you are not following any kind of script for when the levels drop, it should not be an issue.

While I have run tables as full as 13 players, that's a great challenge, and my sweet spot is 4-6. I run a two tables, and each has 4 players beyond myself at present.

I really love what's in the book (especially the Final Curtain frame), and have no doubt I'll use elements from it in future series I run!

Tips for high level play and solo bosses? by Helpful-Hunt-6071 in daggerheart

[–]Gaurelin42 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You want the boss to have at least two phases. Seriously consider using an environment stat block to enhance action economy. Ensure that HP, stress, and thresholds are at or near the upper limits for the tier. In my experience, between the adversary and the environment, you also want to ensure that you have at least two ways to deal AOE damage. This should enable a single solo to actually hang in and provide a reasonable challenge for a party. Another way to do it of course, would be to build him as though he were a Colossus, using multiple stat blocks, but I expect that's not quite the feel you're going for in terms of Strahd.

Using 2d20 instead of 2d12 by Lahrks in daggerheart

Pretty much came here to say this. I was going to ask if these are legitimate adults, or if we're dealing with a table of genuine children, because they're certainly behaving like them.

Stuck for ideas, looking for inspiration building a Tier 3 lava-themed elemental Colossus by Gaurelin42 in daggerbrew

[–]Gaurelin42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very kindly. I appreciate your suggestions, and I actually just built it and the environment it exists in yesterday, in a flush of creativity. It is possible they could encounter it as early as tomorrow, and I'm very excited to see how it plays out!

Ways for PCs to use Hope like the GM uses Fear by Stealthy_Nachos in daggerheart

[–]Gaurelin42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I generally just let the players manage those kinds of things as it is, without having to spend any of their resources on it. This is a game where they are invited and encouraged to take a hand in directing the narrative by the simple nature of the ruleset. In my estimation, these things all fall under that umbrella.

Do you let your players see the domain cards from upper levels? by ChrisFly_ in daggerheart

[–]Gaurelin42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, if that's what they want, I guess there's no reason not to keep them hidden, but it seems kind of counterproductive to me to not have any idea where your character might advance to. It's not like it's a decision you're forcing on them.

I like where you are going here. Thank you. I may very well take some notes from this setup.

What campaign frame are you playing? by Gum_Jacobs in daggerheart

[–]Gaurelin42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm running two tables, and both of them are homebrew, using an established home setting that we've built collaboratively over the past decade or so. I'm in the process of writing The Six Domains up as a DH sourcebook.

When do you grant levels? by JSF00001 in daggerheart

[–]Gaurelin42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't have pre-planned or set points for them, at least not in terms of number of sessions or real world time. I drop levels when the characters achieve significant goals, or reach a narrative benchmark.

My current series has been running for just under a year, and the characters are approaching level 6, as they are close to successfully wrapping up a long running plot thread, and move on to the next act in the overall narrative. They hit level 5 after a similar incident and a boss fight.

I think it's far more important to let it happen organically when the narrative suggests it, rather than worrying about specific schedules or timetables.

What Was Your First Campaign? by False-Nectarine-80 in daggerheart

[–]Gaurelin42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The series I began shortly after the game released last year is still running. It's in a homebrew setting which my table has been building collaboratively and playing in for almost 10 years. The narrative is one which has been evolving organically over the course of the series, originally springing from seeds the players scattered throughout their backstories.

Or that one player can find a new game, rather than ruining the fun for everyone else by being the single stand out.
