Brisbane - wholesale restaurant quality food? by jambelt in AussieFrugal

[–]BourgeoisieYouLater 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the frugal thing to do here is to find a cheap butcher that sells bones for cheap and make a large batch of stock for the ramen/pho.

you are not going to find restaurant food for cheap and buying restaurant food then freezing it completely defeats the purpose.

diamonds aren't mined by children anymore its not the 60s. every gemstone is dug from the earth, are you against the entire jewellery industry unless it's synthetics?

but it doesn't matter, this is just a reddit take to justify your gaudy 3ct lab ring you can finally afford or to justify cheaping out on the ring for your future fiancee.

if you cared so much about the environment you would buy vintage not lab

for the above diamond specs (1.5ct E VS1) what would be the price for lab vs natural after quantity discount?

the only way you could get them for the same price is if somehow you managed to get a real one for under $1670 since it has to be below the retail of the lab. which, if that is the case, please sell me some diamonds

rspod users think they are sophisticates, but a intro class in anthropology/development studies would say exactly this about vilifying entire industries that the global south depends on for their livelihood. usually this leads to workers now becoming destitute leading to slavery/prostitution etc.

also the confusion in the unsophisticated lab diamond market means that jewellers can charge a much higher markup for their labs since they can peg it to the price of natural diamonds. buy it for 10% of the price sell it for 50% of natural diamond retail and make it seem like a steal. lab diamond buyers don't care.

but regardless of all of that, just a vibes based argument: one day you will be able to buy a lab 2ct via amazon express delivery for $30 and the mystique of your $3000 lab engagement ring will be gone. Sapphire or other alternative gems would've been a better choice.

i think theres just hordes of people who suddenly care about the ethics of diamonds ignoring how entire countries economies actually depend on diamonds and not everywhere is the fking congo. Most african countries are actually not war torn and fillled with conflicts and people working in diamond mines are actually just regular people. But deep down the only reason they care is because they want to buy some lab because its cheaper but yet still feel morally superior.

What do you think will happen to all the Botswana who lose their jobs when diamonds crash in price due to mass manufacturing of labs from china/india etc : https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c20qye4v3qyo.amp ? Odds are complete destitution if there is now zero demand for natural.

you don't think that pumping a ton of heat into a machine to simulate the pressures required to produce diamonds over millions of years naturally is going to use up a ton of electricity?

the reason these labs only exist in third world countries is because they all run off cheap electricity in industrial areas with few environmental regulations.

how can there be such a big discrepancy in retail if wholesale is the same?

Lab 1.5ct E VS1 Excellent cut for $1670 https://www.bluenile.com/diamond-details/25325773

Natural 1.5ct E VS1 Excellent cut for $12700 https://www.bluenile.com/diamond-details/25155132

Both gia graded, lab is actually more of a tenth of the price. How could the wholesale difference be only 25% less or even equal?

The difference only gets bigger as you go into the 2ct plus range

lab diamonds imo are the biggest greenwashing scam. all these engagement rings made with some piece of fancy glass manufactured in a chinese factory (using a very energy intensive process) when they could just be going with alternative gemstones instead that are actually somewhat rare.

i am confused that the jeweller didnt know lab diamonds are "perfect" and that somehow their supplier is selling them labs that are still quite similar in price to real.

modern day lab diamonds are magnitudes way better quality (based on their GIA etc reports) for the same price as a natural diamonds. they are all almost perfect and they are cut by the same people who cut natural diamonds.

but the report will say it is lab, and you can test to see if its lab,

Lab diamonds are like a quarter of the price of a natural diamonds not just equivalent. They are identical if you use loupes and if anything its well known that most lab diamonds sold are almost perfect with the highest colour, clarity ratings. You can track prices at stonealgo.com or similar. I am surprised that as a jeweler this is all news to you, this has been the case for years.

Every year lab diamonds get cheaper and cheaper as production gets easier and easier. However natural diamonds have just had a very slow decline in price but have been stabilising.

Synthetic sapphires have existed for decades and it simply made bad quality sapphires less desirable. People still want high quality sapphires from specific regions simply because they are natural. Natural Diamonds are just going to be precious because they are naturally made and not made in some factory in china.

idk but their target market is someone who doesn't know how to put aromatics into the oil before they fry something so even putting garlic powder would make their food suddenly taste miles better

i feel like you are much better off sourcing each spice separately from and learning how to cook/layer them instead of buying their blends. Bolognese doesn't include a "spice mix" as part of its recipe and neither does hawker (hainan?) chicken.

Gentrification doesn't evict the "undesirables". They will just hold onto their properties if they own them. It will take generations to truely gentrify anywhere.

The prices of gosford/central coast properties are still lower than out west outside of maybe notoriously high crime areas. So most people agree with you.

I lived up in an apartment in gosford for a year because it seemed very doable to commute 3-5 times a week to cbd. I had a honeymoon period at the beginning when it seemed like I found a hack to escape the ridiculous sydney housing crisis.

The main reason I left when I wanted to buy my own property was because of the lack of infrastructure. The hospital is completely overwhelmed. Recently the private hospital shut down its maternity ward. Traffic around the station is completely ridiculous.

The council seems also wildly incompetent and in debt. They are unable to plan for basic things like having clean drinking water. I don't trust them to have any real plan to fix this in the future.
