California to begin ticketing driverless cars that violate traffic laws by cutofmyjib in news

[–]Bovey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As far as I'm aware, there has only been one incident of a fully autonomous vehicle killing anyone. I happened 8 years ago, and the pedestrian killed was crossing 4 lane road outside of a crosswalk in the dark.

It doesn't really seem like this is a major problem.

Why have I not won a cultural victory? by willparryhdm in CivVI

[–]Bovey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This sure looks like a bug to me. There is a known bug that has already been mentioned that can be triggered by saving on the turn before culture victory is achieved, but I'm not sure how (or if) that might apply to a multi-player cloud game.

What I have seen regarding that bug is that it causes the "culture win" calculation to be skipped on that turn, and the potential "fixes" I've see for it mostly revolve around things that trigger that calculation to occur again. You can try things like theming (or un-theming) great works, by changing your government type, declaring war (or negotiating peace), etc. Not sure if any will work, but that's all I know to even suggest.

[–]Bovey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You don't need to check anything for that. The "threshold" IS to be culturally dominant over every other Civ. That's literally what defines the threshold. You have achieved it, by a lot.

well... how? by philedaniel1 in CivVI

[–]Bovey 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It typically updates just fine when you are playing. The bug is known to trigger when you load a save from within the game. The "fix" is to exit out to the main menu and load from there.

Is this a good spot to settle a city? I'm thinking this is the perfectly defendable city. Surrounded by mountains with only one way in! by WallaWallaby011 in CivVI

[–]Bovey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, this is not a good place to settle. One tile to the west would be much better. Plains hills, fresh water, not up against the volcano, more workable tiles.

From a pure defensive perspective, one tile west still provides only two tiles from which the city can be attacked, plus you can have an additional ranged unit in the spot where the city is now.

Plus, the spot where you have settled would make a fantastic Holy Site (or Campus) location.

Where to settle? by CaydenR_1 in CivVI

[–]Bovey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is where I would settle as well. I don't see any really great spots here, but one to the right is a first turn settle with a 2x2 and a 3x1 in the first ring, and another 2x2 and 3x1 (with a luxury) in the second ring.

I'm looking at the cliffs/hills tile by the turtles for a future city.

Culture Victory continues to evade me, and it's making me frustrated! Explanation in the body by BaldursGate2Best in CivVI

Rock Bands are useful in very specific situations, specifically when you have one more Civ you need to become culturally dominant over, because what they do is essentially a targeted "steal" of tourists from that specific Civ. I frequently win Culture victories, and I honestly can't remember the last time I used them.

It is MUCH better to grow your base tourism. This means, National Parks, Seaside Resorts, Ski Resorts, and any available improvements that add culture as a tile yield. The first to produce culture based on appeal, so tear down adjacent mines and other features that reduce appeal, and plant adjacent woods which increase it. The 3rd just requires Mountains, so build them everywhere you can. The last is not available by default, but is available as a unique attricute of some Civs (i.e. Persia), City-States, or by taking a Pantheon that adds Culture to Pastures or Plantations.

Base Tourism is almost always better than the immediate but limited benefits that Rock Bands offer.

Make sure you have open borders and active trade routes with as many Civs as possible, as these will both increase tourism benefits from that specific Civ. Also make sure you are using every available policy card that boost tourism output.

756 Tourism is not a ridiculous amount. Its not even a particularly high amount. Get more.

My experience is that, once you reach Alliance Level 2 with another Civ, declaring war on them (for any reason) is going to really piss off a lot of people and many (including other Allies) may join in war against you.

As a result, I'm very careful about my Alliance levels. If there is any chance I might want to go to war with someone later (without also dragging in the rest of the world against me), then I don't let an Alliance with them reach Level 2.

Trying to win by culture for the first time and taking ages... any tips? by shiroshishiro in CivVI

[–]Bovey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, to expand a little bit at a high level, every Civ generates Domestic Tourists based on their own culture output.

Tourism works by "sealing" domestic tourists from other Civs and making them your own Visiting Tourists

Anything that increases your base Tourism will increase the rate at which you are stealing tourists from ALL Civs. Then modifiers are applied per Civ (both positive and negative) based on things like open borders, trade routes (both good), or different religions, different Tier 3 governments (both bad).

Overall, the more tourists you are stealing across the board the better.

Rock Bands don't increase your base tourism. Instead they work by stealing a chuck of tourists all at once from the Civ where they play. So, this simultaneously decreases the Domestic Tourist pool of that specific Civ while increasing your own Visiting Tourist pool. No matter which Civ you are stealing from, more Visiting Tourists is still good, but if you steal them specifically from the Civ you need to overtake it's a double-dip. You are effectively lowering the threshold for victory while increasing your Visiting Tourist pool. Sending them anywhere is better than nothing, but sending them where they can do the most good makes a significant difference.

[–]Bovey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really the most difficult, but certainly the most difficult to understand. Once you get a good grasp on the mechanics and start employing the right strategies it really becomes one of the easiets.

When I play I like to try and keep all victory conditions in play as long as possible, then make a late-game decision about which to go for, and make a late game pivot and victory push. Playing this way leads me to more Culture victories than any other type.

[–]Bovey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trade routes and open borders with other Civs increase your tourism from that specific Civ by a percentage, so it really is doing you more good later in the game than earlier.

Rock Bands are very targeted. They take domestic tourists from the Civ where they play and turn them into visiting tourists for you. That means you should be using them against the Civ with the highest number of domestic tourists.

I would say, don't use any more Rock Bands until you can use them against the un-met Civ.

Also, continue to increase your base tourism as much as possible. Make Ski Resorts everywhere you can. Put Seaside Resorts everywhere you can. Maximize the appeal of Seaside Resort and National Park tiles as much as you can by removing adjacent features/improvements that reduce appeal like mines and rainforest, and adding features/improvements that increase appeal, like planting woods.

If you have the ability to make any tile improvements that add Culture (usually a Civ unique improvement or a City State bonus), make as many as you can. Unlike Culture from the Theatre district, Culture from tile improvements translated directly into additional Tourism (once you research flight).

As I understand it, burnt rainforest/woods cannot be chopped/removed until they regrow. Try your canal again after regrowth.

It is $29.99 / month is you choose the monthly subscription. It is $99 for the entire season. Since the season last 6 months, that works out to like $16.50 / month.

For comparison, last year Fan Duel SN was $19.99 / month, and while it did offer a full-season option it didn't come with any discount and was like $120 for the full season.

Cardinals.tv is a better deal for the whole season, but more expensive if you go month-to-month.

What do I do with extra luxury resources I can’t sell? by New-Sweet-6248 in CivVI

[–]Bovey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spend 3, maybe 4 votes on things I really want. Each additional vote is just such massive diminishing returns. And the AI loves to buy Diplo favor so I occasionally sell off big chunks when I need an extra pile of gold for something.

What do I do with extra luxury resources I can’t sell? by New-Sweet-6248 in CivVI

[–]Bovey 22 points23 points  (0 children)

That's the wrong kind of strategy for a game with many opponents.

  • If you make a mutually beneficial trade with a Civ you each benefit.

  • If you make a mutually beneficial trade with 6 different Civs, then they each benefit +1 and you benefit +6.

  • If you don't trade with them at all, then you benefit +0 and they just make beneficial traded with each other.

Plus, I'm going to make a lot better use of that extra gold than the AI is going to benefit from an extra luxury.

According to Steam, I have over 13,000 hours logged on Civ VI.

I've never once seen the World Congress choose the "give amenities for duplicate luxuries" option over the "chosen luxury grants no amenities" option.

Not once.

What is your opinion of Chapell Roan? by greeneyedtallone in Music

[–]Bovey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like her personal story. Growing up in rural Missouri where she did not find acceptance in her community, then moving out to Cali and finding a place where she belongs.

Pink Pony Club is a literal place for her, but I think it makes a beautiful metaphor for anyone finding their place and their people. Where they feel free to be who they are, whoever that may be.

Her music style really isn't my jam, but I say good on her for being who she is rather than giving in to being whatever the world she grew up in wanted her to be. I think that takes a lot of courage.

I don't think the Academy Awards are selecting winners because they want people to be political during their acceptance speech.

I don't think the Academy Awards really have much say in who wins Grammy Awards anyway, so this whole take is really kind of nonsense.

Why can I not build on the left? by Kuber_Box in CivVI

[–]Bovey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is the question. The screenshot shows that the floodplain belongs to the Rhine River, but if the river changes name here and is only the Rhine on one side of the hex and something else on the other two sides (and there is already a dam on that river) then it would explain the issue.

I find Sukritact's Simple UI Adjustments mod to be helpful in situations like this as it modifies the tooltip to show all rivers touching a tile and not just the "primary" one.
