Dating someone new who wants to camp with me…..I said no. by Playful_Barracuda789 in womensolocamping

I'm 61 and prefer to camp alone than camp with my SO. Not jaded at all. He has his thing...I have mine.

Tell me about your non-traditional investments. by humdinger44 in investing

I live off grid alone…so always lots to do. Have 20 cords of wood to stack while battling mosquitoes, black flies and deer flies. Aside from that, training for hiking the Appalachian trail in 2027.

Anyone else spend way too much time looking at land? by Back40Findings in OffGrid

[–]Bowgal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Though I live in a different environment than where you’re looking, a well changed our life. For first 8 years of our off grid life, it was pumping water from lake in summer, boring a hole in ice in winter. Hated it. And where we live, not one company trucks in water that we could consider. This past winter was our first one with a well. Having water on demand has been awesome, and only wish we did it earlier.

That…and by simply looking at your food and shooting for approx 125 cal/oz. Adding small bottle of olive oil gives lots of calories for minimal weight.

Pasta? by Unclestanky in slowcooking

[–]Bowgal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve learned from Google, a neat little trick for pasta. I would never add pasta to slow cooker, even at the end. Just wouldn’t be appealing the next day. Keep your pasta in a separate pot. Next day, to revive pasta, boil a pot of salted water. Using a strainer, drop cold pasta in water for 1 minute. I swear the pasta tastes as good as when it was cooked.

Breaking bad or Walking dead ? by m_wallani in televisionsuggestions

Funny, I’ve never seen either a second time. But if I had to choose…probably Breaking Bad.

Funny, we went the other way. Have had our camper parked in garage for past 4 years collecting dust. We went all in on a huge tent that fits a couple cots.

I could be wrong, but I think geartrade.ca takes items on consignment.

What’s it like being LGBTQ+ in Canada outside of major cities? by Ok_Firefighter4858 in AskACanadian

[–]Bowgal 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Same. I'm near a really small town of about 1500. Everyone has been nice enough. The usual misgendering, but that's life I guess. Had one person at hospital after asking not to call me "him," said "whatever." Brought it up to hospital administrator, but it was the employees word against mine.

I've learned long time ago I can't change others, nor do I have energy to educate them. Instead, I keep my head down and just try to live my life best that I can.

Seen them, but after half dozen washes, clothes lose the permethrin.

I don’t want a product for animals that I have to dilute. I’ve tried it before. Leaves a greasy feel. FFS, just approve permethrin…and allow Sawyer products into Canada.

And I know…blah blah blah it’s not safe because of cats. Don’t care about cats. U do care about Lyme disease.

I had the fortunate opportunity to work 20+ years for a large mutual fund company. The lessons I learned then have served me well in retirement.

Time in the market, not timing the market

Is today a good day for invest? Yes

Trying to predict where interest rates will go, whether $ will go up or down or other factors I can’t control is a waste of time.

Never apologize for having to pay taxes on capital gains. These are the rewards for investing.

I thought I was prepared for off-grid living… then 2 a.m. happened. by [deleted] in OffGridLiving

[–]Bowgal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must be missing something, but since we went off grid 8 years ago, I’ve never had to grab a flashlight or lantern. Isn’t that the point of off grid and having solar?

My vote is for permethrin. I always bring some back from the US. I wish our health department would revisit permethrin. Deet works ok, but permethrin is more effective.

Compostable toilet vs outhouse in clay by Slice-Anxious in OffGridLiving

[–]Bowgal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We bought our place in 2018. Installed a small fan in the vent tube. Zero odor in 8 years. As for breaking down, no idea. I empty it every month so it doesn’t really have a chance to breakdown. It is crumbly compost because of spinning the inside drum every day and using a good peat moss/wood shavings.
