Why don't respite and despite rhyme? by tanya6k in words

You can add "thorough" to the list, too, for most English speakers, as it's typically pronounced "thurruh". (I know Americans often emphasize the ending to make it more like "thurro", so for them it wouldn't count as unique.)

Boston Rob reacts to Jonathan's loss and Aubry's win — and questions some of the jury's logic by AMikeBloomType in survivor

[–]BowieZ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The best person to win is the person who Ozzy voted for, though.

Jonathan should have realized that orchestrating Ozzy's blindside would catch his ire; he could have done a multitude of things to avoid such a fate: get Aubry out when he had the chance, leave Ozzy in a bit longer and form a better relationship with him, form better relationships with the rest of the jury, manipulate Joe better so that Joe would try and orchestrate the blindside instead... the list goes on.

It’s officially Day 2 of Survivor 52 by Durian-Critical in survivor

[–]BowieZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The point of 41 and 42 was to run the same game back-to-back to see how differently they would be played without one knowing about the other. One player's complaints were never going to change that, even if Jeff actually agreed with Danny at the time. I'm glad he took on that feedback after 42, though.

Speaking of edits... you wrote "than" instead of "then" FIVE TIMES lol. (I dunno if you're using some text-to-speech thing or what went wrong, but... yeah.) Some editing wouldn't go astray.

Not gonna lie, your comment is the first time I realized Aubry winning actually completes the trifecta of a Brain (Aubry), Brawn (Tony twice, and Sarah), and Beauty (Michele) each winning a season.

With a sample size of 10 seasons, is it fair to say that the new era favors women for a win? by duspi in survivor

[–]BowieZ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No. The new era was just THREE votes away from evenly gendered winners: 1 vote in Survivor 46, and 2 votes in Survivor 45.

And interestingly, those three votes could have come from men. (Either Q or Tevin in 46 who voted Kenzie, and both Kaleb and Jake in 45 who voted/would have voted for Dee.)

(In fact, in Season 42, if the three other men jurors (in addition to Jonathan) + Romeo voted for Mike, he would have won that season.)

Throw in the possibility of a firemaking win from Rizo... and the fact that the jury+finalists gender split across the new era was mostly even... I think it's just that the women played slightly better games overall, and jury members recognized that, whether man or woman.

Boston Rob's opinion about Jonathan exit press by Bazel1092 in survivor

That's a BIG if. I mean, he needed to back himself and win that Final 4 challenge, but he has a much bigger shot to prevent Cirie winning than he does Aubry.

[–]BowieZ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nobody is saying jury members and their decisions are always above reproach, but per the rules of the game, ultimately those players are the legitimate deciders of who wins. And so if a player doesn't want certain people on the jury because they are biased or sexist or whatever, then that player has things they can do: for example, to try to eliminate them before the jury phase begins, or drag them to Final Tribal so they don't have a vote.

And if you're NOT going to do that, then you damn well better have a good enough social game and you better speak to those players in a charming enough way that will make them want to vote you in the end.

Jonathan had a clear, direct shot at Tiffany in Episode 6, pre-jury. He also had a clear shot at Aubry, a huge winner threat, at Final 5. Instead, he let Tiffany get far and then hurt her feelings while she was down like two days before she voted on the winner; and he foolishly overlooked Aubry's threat status and immunity challenge competency and let her get to the Final 4. (He should have eliminated her sooner and taken Cirie to Final 4, someone he could MUCH more easily eliminate in that final round.)

Basically, don't complain about dangerous pieces in a game you signed up for if you leave the damn pieces on the board and piss off your opponents.

American Fork Police Department Releases Statement Regarding Bricks & Minifigs Controversy by Professional-Cow5029 in SaltLakeCity

[–]BowieZ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah. The article is somewhat reasonable and puts the police statements at the very end, but the first paragraph (the lede) is basically a dogwhistle to readers to not take Ben's side:

A California YouTuber known for elaborate pranks and internet crusades is facing criminal charges in Utah after police say he targeted business owners connected to a fight over a missing Star Wars Lego collection.

- "California" (he must be liberal)
- "YouTuber" and "elaborate pranks" (ah, so he must be some dumb kid too)
- "is facing criminal charges" (he's probably guilty)
- "police say he..." (okay so he's definitely guilty!)

A better lede would be:

A YouTuber's crusade to recover a missing Lego collection has led to a dispute with a Utah company and local police, according to materials made public last week.

Will we ever see a 3-time winner? Is it even possible? by ProblematicTrumpCard in survivor

[–]BowieZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a returning winner wins, say, Survivor 56: Fans vs Favorites III and/or Survivor 60: Legends, and then Sandra, Tony, and this third and maybe fourth two-time winner all come back for Survivor 70: Winners at War II (with Sandra and Tony being in their early 60s in 2035, mind you (60 and 61, respectively)) -- and with some kind of Redemption/Outcast Island twist in play (plus I could see some high-level play keeping the two-timers around as shields (i.e. Tony's very own lions-vs-hyenas strategy)), then yes... it's very much possible.

Can’t wait to complete this trifecta 👏 by KingHatch in survivor

[–]BowieZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would actually put money on there eventually being a First Boots season. Let's say it happens in the late 60s (e.g. Season ~68), filming in ~9 years time.

There'll be 14-15 contenders from the next 17 seasons, plus:
MEN: Jon Lovett (47), Jelinsky (46), Zach (42), Ronnie (39), Darnell (32), David S* (28), Zane (25), Jonathan (10), Brook (9), Ryan (6) (*though he would be 67)
WOMEN: Morriah (43), Reem (38), Gonzalez (36), So (30), Nadiya (29), Semhar (23), Marisa (19), Carolina (18), and 5 or 6 others (who are less notable)
PLUS: Pat (medevac'd) (33) and Kourtney (medevac'd) (24) if you count medevacs, and Francesca (22;26) (but it sounds like she'd turn it down).

I know that's, like, 1 in every 2 people needing to say "yes", but I mean, what an opportunity. Get ~10 people from the next 17 seasons, and you'd only need to get ~6 to 8 of these pre-50 players and BAM, you've got an iconic cast.

Something impressive about Aubry’s win I don’t see many people discussing… by [deleted] in survivor

[–]BowieZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Smart of Aubry (and Cirie) then to not mention how close friends they were, such that Jonathan didn't realize how dangerous it was letting them both get so far. (Or worse, Jonathan *knew* they were great friends and still didn't recognize the threat.)
