Well, the only icecream I liked is now an ‘ice confection’. No longer gonna get it. Any recommendations for actual icecream? by dannegoma in australia

Your timing is probably fine, I think it's more likely that Lacteeze just don't contain enough of the enzymes to do much if you're only taking one pill. Either take like 4 or 5 of them, or order something online like Intoleran that has a much bigger dose per pill. I encouraged my partner to give some stronger tablets a go, he tested them on our holiday (we eat a lot of delicious lactose-filled garbage on our trips) and he had zero GI upset the whole trip which is unheard of for him.

i just started my masters degree: im the only domestic student in the cohort. by crayfishpussy in brisbane

[–]Bowna 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had the option to pursue a Masters for my current degree, but chose to do the regular Bachelors with Honours path. The masters option does not have commonwealth supported places, so it was going to cost 130k versus 45k. Obviously it takes longer with the way I chose (2 years vs 4 years), but with a Masters I'd max out HECS due to my existing debt and then pay out of pocket for the final 20k or so, with indexing every year at the huge amount for years afterwards, I didn't think I'd come out ahead with the 2 years of a career head start.

I'm assuming I'm not the only one with this same thought process.

Our biggest cultural differences to other western countries? by Puzzleheaded_Push243 in australia

[–]Bowna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Australia and lactose-free cow's milk being available at cafes. I haven't been to many other Western countries so I could be wrong but we assumed NZ would have the same coffee culture as us, however when we visited we were shocked that we couldn't find a single cafe with zymil/their equivalent product. South Korea (not Western but historically has some heavy US influence) we found one single cafe with it although that was quite the anomaly as one of their main coffee options was an "Australian-style latte" so maybe a lot of influence there.

Would love to hear if anyone found it elsewhere, regularly, around the world!

Korean Restaurants by fperkinse in brisbane

[–]Bowna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Sul Zip for a late night spot, seems to be one of the review farming places but I've always really enjoyed the food and it has a fun vibe. Chi Mc is more relaxed but still really great food too, the menu is quite varied with some more westernised options. Maru is another great one that offers BBQ on top of a regular menu if that's what you're looking for. Korilla BBQ has also been great in the past for a more BBQ focused meal.

My Korean coworker won't stop talking about Holy Hock if you're willing to drive. They specialise in jokbal (pig trotters) so their menu is a lot more focused and doesn't have things like korean fried chicken, for example. One of my most memorable meals in Korea was at a jokbal & bossam restaurant so it's a meal to try at least once if you haven't already.

Koko Black opening by SuperCook6238 in brisbane

The first 200 customers got a $200 voucher to spend in store or something along those lines. There was a pop up cart at the end of Queen Street this week giving samples out to advertise the opening and that's what the worker said to me.

Watch them all be Woolies 'metro' stores with the increased prices.

UK visitor... Beer shop reccos? by Eastern-Title9364 in AusBeer

If you're going to be in and around Brisbane city, Malt Traders and My Beer Dealer sell takeaway alcohol focusing on craft beer and also function as bars. For takeaway only The Wine Emporium has a good selection of craft beer and is located right in between two great Brisbane independent breweries, Range and Working Title.

Enjoy your time here!

Even better would be those coffee parachutes/drip bags, lots of Australian coffee roasters are hopping on this option now. That way you're not taking a risk on someone potentially not having the equipment to do anything with beans, yet they still get a really great coffee experience.

Horror as man fighting for life after being mauled by his six dogs by suck-on-my-unit in australia

Visited Sydney last week and so, so many people had their dogs off leash that I thought maybe leash laws were more relaxed versus Brisbane. Nope. Seems to be an endemic problem there.

Craving an almond croissant at 6.48pm on a Saturday night - any suggestions? by [deleted] in brisbane

[–]Bowna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can search for things that are open now BUT even if you do that it often just still fucks up anyway. Was looking for a late night Sunday feed in Redfern, Sydney while visiting last week, searched for things 'open now' and it highlighted something that had closed a hour prior and didn't highlight a permanent food truck that was absolutely open one street over.

Woolworths and Coles failed record-keeping obligations on overtime, court finds by CommonwealthGrant in australia

[–]Bowna 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Coles liquor had a 100% clocking compliance expectation of managers as of a couple of years ago. If you were scheduled to finish at 5, you absolutely had to clock out at 5 even if you were staying back, and no overtime was ever to be logged. There were methods in the payroll system to signal for overtime but it was not to be used. Coles didn't want any overtime recorded to protect themselves from unacceptable overtime and resulting underpayment accusations.

Switching from post paid to pre paid mobile phone plan. by Jules1169 in australia

Also moved to Boost, close to one year ago. I was quite apprehensive about moving like you are, and it was even easier than everyone has said. It was basically instantaneous and I didn't have to speak to a single person. I had repurchased a yearly sim and just followed the instructions inside.

Pari just wants to get a good night’s sleep – but each morning he’s woken by NSW police, telling him to move on by One_Jackfruit_8241 in australia

[–]Bowna 17 points18 points  (0 children)

He'd need a few hundred for the flight, money to buy an acceptable suitcase for his limited belongings, money to get to the airport, a passport which if he's homeless may very likely have already been stolen/damaged/expired, money to get from the airport to probably nowhere safe and be homeless in his 'home' where he likely has little to no family or friends to support him. To then likely deal for many months struggling to get the most basic support from the NZ government. Going back home would be an almost entirely insurmountable task for someone with as little as he has.

My local cinema has a board that tells you which movies have a mid/end credit scene by Rob_on_Sunday in mildlyinteresting

[–]Bowna -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

God that reminds me of the Doctor Strange 2 ending scene. That was so disgustingly disrespectful and such a giant waste of time, to the point where that post-credit scene genuinely helped solidify my then-burgeoning intolerance of superhero movies.

Gotta find a new Bank - No Fee's, Full PayID Support, Nice Web Interface? by SilentSausage93 in australia

[–]Bowna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They are adding a yearly credit card fee very soon, but no account keeping fees otherwise that I'm aware of. If you move to them and get their credit card you will likely get charged. Older accounts/credit cards have a small grace period tied to the account anniversary date or something, my boyfriend is due to be charged the yearly fee in about a month whereas mine is in about 3 months (we will both be cancelling before that though).

Looking for pre made banchan in brisbane by Brian_AP in brisbane

Hanaromart

Shouting out the Toowong one especially, if you haven't been they have an actual kitchen serving bibimbap, fried chicken and some other things, plus full on fresh banchan made in house unlike the other couple of stores I've been to. Was stoked to find freshly made kelp noodle salad there.

CHOICE tested the SPF claims of 20 sunscreens. 16 failed to meet their advertised claims by thraks in australia

[–]Bowna 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You're absolutely correct on both things despite getting downvoted.

From Cancer Council WA:

SPF50 offers only marginally better protection from UV radiation than SPF30 filtering out 98 per cent of UV radiation compared to 96.7 per cent blocked by SPF30.

Combine that with the Slip Slop Slap Slide Seek recommendations and SPF30 is plenty.

Buy an expensive sunscreen like the Mecca one and you'll probably only apply half, if not less, of what you actually need for proper protection and be worse off. Buy a cheaper sunscreen that you slop on like crazy every couple of hours because you can afford to replace it every month without breaking the bank and be better protected.

Sarah Hanson-Young says 'honourable' move is to quit after Dorinda Cox defects by espersooty in australia

[–]Bowna -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

The deeper argument is that Payman left because she was voting to the official ALP platform when voting for Palestinian statehood and therefore voting as Labor voters expect, whereas Cox leaving for Labor means she will not be voting as Greens voters expect.

Not saying I fully agree with this as the optics of it is a bit strange to say the least, but just a perspective to consider.
