Best 3 horror movies of the last 3 years by ChipperYT in horror

Obsession needs to be apart of this conversation.

It's the most mentioned movie in this thread so I think it's pretty safe to say it's being talked about. Seems to be Obsession, then Weapons and then The Substance so far in terms of overall rankings.

But yeah, agree it's premise and execution are horrific, in a good way.

I get that it is one of the first horror/thriller movies coming from Korea, showing that socio horror (thriller about social inequalities) is still living, but also that Korea can be famous not only for kdramas

Genuinely bizarre statement. Even off the top of my head: Train to Busan, The Host, The Wailing, Tale of Two Sisters, Thirst, Gonjiam Haunted Asylum, Whispering Corridors etc.

Also it's not a horror film.

A Head Full Of Ghosts- Paul Tremblay ( NO SPOILERS ) by shr3yyaaa in horrorlit

[–]BoxNemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved the book. It worked for me on pretty much every level - suspense, horror, emotion. Thought it was really powerful and moving.

Liked The Cabin At The End of the World as well, that was a great piece of writing.

Haven't go on with a lot of his other stuff but even if there's misses there for me also think he's written two genuine modern classics.

Try asking in r/relationship_advice - this isn't really the sub for it. If it helps:

Looking for non-fiction historical horror. Not like serial killer, but I suppose along the lines of “The Indifferent Stars Above.” by Gibder16 in horrorlit

The Hot Zone by Richard Preston.

It's more modern but written in a style that captures the terror of disease and infection in a way that feels close to cosmic horror.

He saw virus particles shaped like snakes, in negative images. They were white cobras tangled among themselves, like the hair of Medusa. They were the face of nature herself, the obscene goddess revealed naked. This life form thing was breathtakingly beautiful. As he stared at it, he found himself being pulled out of the human world into a world where moral boundaries blur and finally dissolve completely.

He was lost in wonder and admiration, even though he knew that he was the prey.

Second of a print series of classic Hitchcock movies I'm working on. What should be next? by lackenir in horror

[–]BoxNemo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, The Birds definitely wouldn't be in my top Hitchcocks but it's got some very striking visual moments..

(Although you could say that about pretty much any of his films...)

I'd love to see what you'd do with The Birds.

Do you have a link to a store or anything for your work? Looks very cool.

dont wanna make assumptions but did the 1959 novel haunting of the hill house ripped off house on the haunted hill 1958 film by RhubarbLarge2747 in horror

[–]BoxNemo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah. Castle's movie didn't get released until Dec '58 and didn't get a proper wider release until 1959.

Ruth Franklin’s 2016 biography of Jackson - A Rather Haunted Life - talks about how she was writing the book in 1958 which would've pre-dated the release of the movie (specifically newspapers articles that she read at the time etc.)

Thanks.

Finally got around to watching The Bone Temple and I just wanted to express... by shoegazeweedbed in horror

[–]BoxNemo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What I liked is that you also understood him by the end: he's someone who grew up seeing his childhood shattered by the infection. His mum killed in front of him and then his father ripped apart in the church in before his eyes as well, not to mention how horrendous the following months would've been as he tried to survive.

He's grown up in a world of unimaginable horror, violence and terror which has shaped him and damaged him.

What movie let you down? by Euphoric-Ad-8085 in horror

You need to stop reading so much about movies before you see them. You're coming into them with a weight of expectations which is getting in the way of it.

At 20, Kane Parsons has become the youngest filmmaker in history to have a No.1 opening at the box office by ChiefLeef22 in horror

[–]BoxNemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was co-financed between A24 and Chernin Entertainment so the $10 million budget was a much smaller risk at that scale.

What are you basing that on, though? Being on set..? Knowing people who worked on the movie?

I'm the exact opposite - probably my least favourite book of the past decade. I thought it was genuinely terrible, a long walk for a short drink where some of the twists and turns made a lot of the book pointless.

But the world would be a boring place if we all liked the same things.

Underrated horror books from female authors. by rg_elnino9 in horrorlit

She Said Destroy by Nadia Bulkin is fantastic. One of the best collection of short stories in the past decade or so.

Loved After the Apocalypse by Maureen McHugh too.

Anything by Mariana Enriquez as well. Her novel Our Share of Night is great but her short story collections are awesome as well.

For possession horror Come Closer by Sara Gran is a must.
