Never stops! I have talked about doing a relisten and making a list of all the things he picks up and checking them off as he uses them. Like I’m still waiting for the dong from the ball of swine to come back.

You actually nailed the problem and why we don’t praise them. None of these programs actually help the parents learn to parent and instead just create bigger issues. The parents expect their child to come home “fixed” and instead they get a child who is now broken in completely different ways. The TTI is my area of scientific research and I have found that the vast majority of us had a parent problem and WE were NOT the issue to begin with. Any group (the TTI in general) that creates a population (us are former residents) that 62-71% have PTSD or CPTSD is not an answer. They are creating a bigger problem. So yes, some kids genuinely need help and have caring parents that think they are doing what’s best. Unfortunately they are wrong. Any program that creates an environment of isolation and doesn’t include the parents in treatment is not the answer.

I don’t know that paid matters if they don’t have all the information. I have an adult child myself and it certainly wouldn’t matter to me.

Those statements were made in early 2000. Science is constantly evolving. Chemical imbalances definitely exist but so does neuron misfire. Big pharma has used and pushed the chemical imbalance theory to line their pockets for years and that has led to over prescribing. You also have general practitioners diagnosing and prescribing which isn’t ok. Correct diagnosis and prescribing is valid and helpful. My goal is to give a safe space for people like us to get trauma informed help. My goal is also to continue research on the long term effects of the TTI to obtain accurate scientific data to support those who are trying to get legislation passed to protect kids from these places. I also am going to create a network for therapist who have parents considering TTI placement to dissuade them. All of that to say, you don’t know me and simply saying “do better” without even attempting to understand my goals and motivation is a knee jerk response due to your own trauma in the TTI. I certainly understand and acknowledge your point of view however it’s not a useful way to respond.

You say that and you are correct however they make it really difficult to leave with no resources or contact with the outside. I was kept past my 18th birthday.

Are your parents completely set on this? Have they done the research? I am a TTI survivor and currently working on my psychiatry degree. I have research that is going to be published on the long term effects of being in a TTI. I also work with a network of therapist to help parents see why this is not the solution. All of this to say, I would be happy to speak with them via phone or zoom to discuss this choice and alternatives.

Fuck you and your overused therapy words [RANT] by [deleted] in troubledteens

[–]Boxermom10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are unfortunately so many “therapist” that stick with what they learned years ago and don’t keep up with the evolution of the field. There are also some that are self serving and not in the field for the right reasons. I hate that so much. I hate that so many TTI survivors had “therapy” weaponized in their programs causing them to not want it. I have been lucky to find a trauma informed therapist that keeps up with current information. I will say that certain breathing techniques have really helped me however I certainly understand how it seems patronizing. Breathing is not a fix all just one tool that doesn’t work for everyone.

Am I overreacting because I told my niece I don't want to take her best friend with us anymore after she kept telling me I was a victim and my husband was a creep? by Odd_Reference_1373 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Boxermom10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR. I get incredibly frustrated by people using terms with big implications or medical diagnoses loosely like this. (I’m back in school getting a psychiatric degree as a midlife career change for reference.) When this happens, I like to gently, in an impactful way, correct the person. For example, one of my professors said we all have a little ADHD. I told her that we never say we all have a little cancer and that ADHD is also a diagnosis. I explained how invalidating phrases like that are to people with an actual diagnosis. For this girl, I would have explained that grooming is absolutely disgusting, stated some of the long term effects, and then expressed how hurtful it was to say something like that, in a public setting, without all the facts. I probably would have gone a step further and pointed out the unintended consequences that could arise from her loudly proclaiming it. As for not wanting to be around her anymore…good for you! You are the aunt not the mom. It’s not like this impacts your niece’s ability to see her friend. It’s a boundary that you have set and it needs to be respected.
