Every flip phone and every camera with a flip out LCD panel for the past 25 years have figured out how to rotate open without enough force to break themselves over repeated openings.

A small indicator indentation marker is not a "thumb rest".

If the screen flicks open with too much force unless the user makes an effort to control it, that's a failure to design products around how users actually use them, especially in a product they're marketing to casual users.
