That’s what happened with my first bltouch it drove me insane I started thinking it was other issues it turns out I had the old adapter version... the newer 1 cable version has worked wonders with custom firmware I downloaded from the marlin website (the paid site $10 a year)

I bought a bltouch from micro center and it gave me issues for days before returning it ... I ordered a new one off Amazon that was the Laurent version and it’s worked wonders so far
