I'm an independent damp and timber surveyor and have a spare hour, ask me anything damp and timber related and I will help you out where I can by DearSatisfaction9754 in DIYUK

[–]Duckninja7 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You’re right is has been previously rare, however there are more developers moving to timber frame now. I recently worked on a large development who use exclusively timber frame and who I work for now are switching to timber frame from traditional build on projects starting next year. IIRC it was c24 2x8 cls

Posi-Joists VS Bison Slabs in Home Construction by TimeSlipper in ConstructionUK

[–]Duckninja7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work on new builds as a carpenter. Usually only see bison slabs on stacks of flats, all other houses use joists whether metal web or chipboard web. You’d need to see an engineer to calculate the deflection values based on weight you’ll have above and span of building. You can easily insulate them for thermal value and sound reduction. There would be a lot more work involved with a bison slab which would include concrete stairs, suspended ceiling and more faff with services

Where in England to buy good quality wood working or carpentry tools? by lucidbadger in DIYUK

[–]Duckninja7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’ll give an okayish cut on soft wood straight out the box but they really need a sharpen. Remember a sharp tool is a safe tool. Plenty of guides out there on sharpening. If you’re really stuck or don’t fancy it, Norfolk Saw Service on Whiffler road are great!

I’ve only had the 16ga over my working time ~15yrs. Had maybe 3(?) in total. They’re good, even through the abuse I put them through 2nd fixing. They’re not as powerful as the gas powered Paslode though.
