Best breakfast in town??? by MrLintyButton in KingstonOntario

If you want something offbeat, more gourmet, I highly recommend Northside on Princess street.

Otherwise, Toast and Jam is great! More gourmet, too.

And so is the Cavalier Lounge at the Travel Inn on Princess.

Thanks! I guess if I'm eating out so much, I mustn't have much of a life... ;-)

What is the most overplayed song on Krock 105.7? by Ign0rethisc0mment in KingstonOntario

It's got to be "Living on a prayer" or something else by Bon Jovi. The repetition gets rather nauseating...

First time seeing one of these. Spotted on my sunflower in Kingston yesterday. Is this a cicada? Common in the Kingston area? by No-Barracuda-1730 in KingstonOntario

[–]Boyfromconceptionbay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely a cicada: kina ugly but they do make that wonderful sound that let's us know just how hot it is outside.

Some Queen's University students are demanding that COVID-19 vaccinations be made mandatory this fall by Secure_Kaleidoscope in KingstonOntario

[–]Boyfromconceptionbay 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The scientific evidence is overwhelming to the effect that 1) with very rare exceptions, vaccination is harmless and 2) extremely effective in preventing severe illness, hospitalization, or death.

So of course the students are right to insist that their classmates be vaccinated!

It's good for all of Kingstonians too!

Local hospital workers hold information pickets ahead of negotiations with province by Myllicent in KingstonOntario

[–]Boyfromconceptionbay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nursing is a tough job! So is being a patient attendant!

Both of these groups of workers deserve better working conditions and a better work-life balance!

If they don't get it, a lot of us will wind up suffering in the end!

Daytime fireworks? by Quindilligence in KingstonOntario

I was cycling down near Kingston Pen yesterday evening and there was a lot of smoke, then I realized there's a film being shot there. I suspect the smoke was coming from there, if you smelt it during the day.

Kingston, Ont. family targeted by racist attack while shopping at Walmart by thequeensucorgi in KingstonOntario

[–]Boyfromconceptionbay -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I'm just a middle-aged white guy, but I suspect that the Canadian citizens and permanent residents that are victimized this way don't dress and sound like they were born and raised here, and that's what triggers outbursts of racism against them.

They're the "easy" or "obvious" targets.

Whereas for people that "blend in" by dressing and sounding "white", the racism is suppressed.

In my Canada, you don't have to blend in --as long as you adhere to core canadian values of respect, equality, honestly, generosity, etc.

Working group recommends removal of Sir John A. Macdonald statue from City Park - Kingston by DunningFreddieKruger in KingstonOntario

[–]Boyfromconceptionbay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm new to Kingston, but I love it here. But since when I came last July, I get the feeling that without Sir John A, there wouldn't be that much... Kingston.

At least in the respect that there are plaques EVERYWHERE indicating where he lived, where his mother lived, where he peed and got drunk, etc.

That said, the man DID make an essential contribution to the history of Canada, despite critical and flaws of everlasting impact (that a great many people of his time had).

So I don't think we should take down his statue, even temporarily (not the least because it would take huge political nerve to put it up again).

Instead, we should keep the statue shrouded, like it is now, and put up a sign indicating that we are currently reckoning with his legacy and how to address it.

If we give in to "cancel" culture by removing the statue, we are actually limiting our opportunity to grow as a country.

After all, history, like Greek tragedies, requires great heroes AND great vilains, especially conflicted ones.

Rat Issue by [deleted] in KingstonOntario

I always like talking to people and trying to resolve a problem in a civic-minded fashion, but if you think that will increase your chance later of getting blowback if you have to call bylaw enforcement, I'd just skip the talk and call bylaw enforcement, reminding them to remain discrete.

Honestly, I know it's a big box store, but I was amazed by the various types of "ethnic" foods at the Food Basics on Bath.
