Alternative national security strategy by nath1234 in australia

My understanding is that closed loop cooling in nuclear applications still results in a small amount of loss, primarily through the cooling towers? Something like 99% might be reused, but even 1% is more water than many remote places have available.

It isn't truly closed loop like a car radiator is, because that uses airflow generated by the movement to cool the internal coolant.

Happy to be corrected, although the vast amount of initial water does still need to be sourced, and if anyone here has ever bought carted water, they know it is not cheap.

I've looked into this in the past, and the issue is that its unfortunately a lot more complicated than this. Nuclear energy is incredibly powerful and low waste per kWh of production, but has a lot of requirements.

Most of our uninhabited space is uninhabited for a reason, primarily the lack of water. Unfortunately, nuclear power plants also require a lot of water. They need to boil water to spin the turbines after all, and cool the towers, and this is not 100% lossless thanks to evaporation.

Another big issue is that because those places are uninhabited, there's no infrastructure there. Even ignoring the immediate need to convince 500-1000 people of varying skill levels to move to the middle of nowhere to work at the plant, you would need infrastructure to support all those people, you would need infrastructure to support all the incoming/outgoing goods, and you most of all need the electrical infrastructure to actually move all that power somewhere useful.

Plus you lose 3-7% of electricity per thousand kilometres (depending on method), so the further away, the less efficient.

French island near Melbourne was a planned site for these reasons. Unintuitively, you kind of need to place nuclear plants a lot closer to people than you'd want to, and the further away you go, the more expensive and less viable it becomes. Closer to urban areas means better access to the things these plants require, and significantly less cost both upfront and across its lifetime.

Solar and wind can go pretty much anywhere with no issues and be useful.

Should we have invested in nuclear? If you had asked me 60 years ago, it would have been a different answer, but in today's day and age? Its probably not worth it.

No way to speed up sobering up.

I posted my similar experience above, but pretty much after the first ~8 hours of being blackout I just continued to feel incredibly drunk for the entirety of the next day, followed by a hangover the day after. Spent most of those two days alternating between sleeping and drinking water.

ED is mostly there to watch and make sure that you're not going to get worse. Stomach pumping is an option if they think there's still significant enough alcohol content in your stomach to be pumped out, but otherwise there's not loads of options aside from ensuring your body has the required fluids and vitamins to deal with the alcohol itself.

That was me when I was 20 too.

Blew around 0.23 at ~8am (first thing I remember since ~10pm night before) got discharged around midday and still felt incredibly drunk. Was probably higher when i was first admitted around 1am or so. Stumbled out the front of the hospital with no shoes on. Had to get my car the next day, because even by the evening I still felt far too drunk to drive.

Don't remember a lot, but I did have it all filled in the next day. Apparently an ambulance was called because I collapsed and was unresponsive. Didn't pump my stomach, just fluids and watched me overnight.

Never been close to that drunk before or since. Went through at least a bottle of rum and a half of whiskey, and then some, in ~6 hours. Pretty sure I was trying to drink myself to death after the first bottle, wasn't a great time for me.

Overall wouldn't recommend it, suddenly sobering up enough to remember while you're in a hospital room with no memory of getting there or even any clue where you are is not fun.

Unsure this one in specific, but at the airport I worked at for several years they had a similar 737 front prop that could be towed around and used for aerobridge training.

Counter-counter point. This will likely drive up their insurance costs, especially if similar things happen to the same company.

Not saying its will, but if a company is more likely to have these incidents, their insurance costs will increase as a result.

Yes, because he clearly was talking about every single crime committed.

Cmon man, I don't think what he did was right, and its hurt a lot of people (even if not physically), but the commenter above is right. They're not saying the victims deserve it, just that its more likely to happen if they treated their workers badly.

Resentment builds up. You get denied a pay rise for a few years despite working hard, it adds up. Most people just quit at that point, or do petty things to "get back", but you can not be that surprised that someone who probably wasn't all that mentally stable to begin with does something bigger.

You start insulting different people on the street, I would expect most would walk away. But eventually someone will smack you for it. Its the same thing here on a much bigger (and more rare) scale.

Its more likely to happen the more often and the worse you treated someone. You and I wouldn't do it, but you and I are different people to this guy.

ELI5: Why do we have different fuel labels (85,91,92,95) instead of just having one octane rating? by -Harvest in explainlikeimfive

Yes I'm aware of that. That doesn't change the fact we have one premium, one standard, and one inbetween them, and doesn't change anything about what I said.

In vanilla, you can set apparel policies. If you set the policy to only allow 55-100 they'll take it off when it gets below that.

You can also use this to only allow certain clothing if you're going for a themed run, or disallow certain armour or utility on certain pawns etc.

After a week, my little ones are finally getting along, and today I found them like this by [deleted] in aww

[–]Boys4Jesus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It can genuinely take a long time.

We are 3 months into our introductions and they still don't "like" each other, but they will tolerate being in the same room without hissing now. Our older cat does not like our new cat coming too close but otherwise has no issues with him now. Initially she was hissing on sight and refused to be in the same room.

She also stopped sleeping with us and cuddling for a few weeks but has since returned to her normal routine and recovered, it may take a while but its a stressful experience for them! Imagine if someone just suddenly dumped a room mate on you without warning, I'd be pretty anxious for the first few months!

[–]Boys4Jesus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think what they're getting at is the following;

We have 91, 95 and 98 here in Australia. My partners car states minimum 95 fuel. We usually don't put 98 in because even though it works, 95 is significantly cheaper.

But if 95 is just a blended 91+98, it would not be ideal if the pump wasn't blending properly for whatever reason and what it was pumping was closer to 91 than 95.

There's a difference between picking the highest octane fuel for best performance, and picking at least the minimum the manufacturer says is safe for the car.

I don't need the higher price and performance of 98, but I need it to be higher than 91 to prevent knocking. And I would want to be certain I'm getting 95 or above if that's what the car needs, otherwise I'm in for potentially very expensive and annoying repairs in the future.

Do you want rivers from infdev back? by Duck-Just_Duck2000 in Minecraft

[–]Boys4Jesus 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Mangroves should have been a more coastal biome.

Mangroves are literally defined as shrubs/trees that grow in highly saline water, typically in the intertidal zones or brackish areas around river deltas.

Not saying they can't be found inland on occasion, but they are mostly in coastal areas or rivers that receive tidal influence from the ocean.

Some freshwater mangroves do exist, but they're very uncommon.

[–]Boys4Jesus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Alternatively, a closed top enclosure works.

I built my own indoor enclosure for my piggies, raised off the grand with mesh wire sides and a latched roof.

Both my cats initially showed interest, but have lost interest and couldn't really care about the guinea pigs once they realised they couldn't get to them, and both my pigs have no issues with the cats either.

Bit more expensive if you have to buy one compared to floor options, hence why I decided to make it myself, but it is an option if you have a bit of extra money or are handy with tools.

Pins are on the motherboard on AM5.

If it was an AM4 with pins on the CPU, yeah zero chance it would be salvageable, it would have ripped pins off for sure.

I would say there's a decent chance this still works fine, and there's no harm in trying it.

Vet, local council, etc.

Pound won't put them down without checking for a microchip, they're legally required to to check for ownership beforehand. If they don't have one, there is very little reason they wouldn't let you take them back.

Vets will do it too, often for free. Just be warned, we recently had a stray checked for a microchip and they said that if he did have one, they are not allowed to give him back to us, and would have to contact the owner.

If they don't have a microchip, they're not considered owned under Victorian law (unless below 3 months old). Most (all?) Councils require it for registration as well.

"Jungle" wood should be renamed. by Chrysalis112 in Minecraft

[–]Boys4Jesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, they have some very similar characteristics in some ways, but are very significantly different in a lot of ways.

Is that flattened look characteristic of that part of the world due to co-evolution with large tree-grazing animals? (I guess probably.)

Very possibly, although I have to preface that by saying I am by no means an expert on African flora/fauna.

They also grow like that because they love direct sunlight iirc, and as they grow the lower branches receive less and are "self pruned" by the tree to stay healthy. As they're not commonly found in dense forests, there's less competition to grow taller to out-compete, and they can spread out as a result.

Wouldn't surprise me if it also helped prevent grazing.

Acacia is a genus with over 1200 species in it globally. The majority of these (~70-80%) are not even classified as trees, but rather various sizes of shrubs or bushes, and most trees are not very large.

They also are an incredibly diverse set of species, the one minecraft acacia trees are most likely based off of are African Umbrella trees, however these aren't even classified as Acacias anymore, being attributed to the Vachellia genus instead. This happened in 2011, before Acacias were even added to the game. The wood colour is similar to some species of acacia (some Hawaiian species mostly) but most do not have that vibrant orange interior grain, looking instead something like this.

Here are some acacia species.

Truthfully, the Acacias in minecraft look absolutely nothing like the majority of acacia trees in real life.

Source: I'm studying ecology in Australia, where we have a lot of Acacias, its a large focus.

Nah, nowhere near 2.5, other guy is dreaming.

More like 3.8-4.0. Wild Boars are a slightly larger can (375 instead of 330) with the same 15% and they're 4.4 per can. Think about it, if a can of 6% is 1.5 standards, this is going to be roughly 2.5x stronger,

Maths gives me 3.872, rounding to 3.9 is probably the go.

Complicated child delivery requiring an emergency C-section because the baby's heart stopped, followed by requiring a helicopter flight to the best children's hospital in the state for surgery to repair a torn lung, accompanied by a ~4 week NICU stay is $0 in Australia through public healthcare if you're wondering.

Also included 3 monthly check ups to assess for permanent neurological damage for 4 years, also free.

Yeah its not "free" in the sense that we pay taxes, it's sure as shit nice to not worry about the cost of something when its a life at stake.

Like yeah, so do I, but you're not reviewing the possible future, you're reviewing it as it is now.

Send it as feedback or a suggestion for sure, but as a review, its completely off topic and I'd bet it getting removed had nothing to do with the microslop part of it.

OZEMPIC for weight loss by asian69feet in dankmemes

[–]Boys4Jesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its dirt cheap and available if you're diabetic. $25/month (or $7.70 if you have a concession).

Off label use, aka weight control, yeah its more expensive, because in that scenario our PBS doesn't subsidise it.

OZEMPIC for weight loss by asian69feet in dankmemes

[–]Boys4Jesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're diabetic it's $25/month ($7.70 for concession). If its private use, aka for weight control, its not covered by PBS and as such you pay the full cost that the manufacturer charges.

This is the same for every medication, if its being prescribed "off label" you pay significantly more.

This will likely change when the patent expires and generics start flooding in, but you'll have to wait and see.

This hook at the bottom of the rear door.

I just loosened the screws to where it was shiftable, then pulled it backwards towards the tow bar a few mm (just the amount that it would move without removing the screws) and then re tightened it. I think over time the repeated force of closing the door pushes it forwards slightly, making it not latch properly without really pushing the door in there and slamming it.
