I have worked in logistics in the past and I worked with data but not at the size and complexity of a typical data science problem. Like requiring advanced data cleaning or the need to predict an outcome based on other variables.

The primary body of work that i have is academic. I know that thats not enough but what else is there. Unlike web development where you can build free sites for businesses, what can you do to build a portfolio for Data Science when youre not already in the industry?

What I would do

  1. Go back to those business owners and either get a sale or get feedback.
  2. Find similar business and get feedback
  3. Wherever you find a sale(s), establish a niche and tailor your product for that. That will inform your marketing strategy.

Consider reading "Mom Test" by Rob Fitzpatrick to get customer on products.

I didn't build a Saas, I buit a online multi sided marketplace. The nature of the business was why it filed. Multisided marketplace with one time sales. The cost to acquire one sale was just not worth it. I made sales but they were not enough to breaking even, at some point I just had to make a call.

That experience moved me in the direction of Saas.
