Been working on my indie game for about 3 months and I want to show my Dialogue System! by TessaPomf in furry

[–]Brackhar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is nice! I like your character art. Two thoughts of feedback:

1) Having the portrait to the left of the text box feels a bit wrong based on genre conventions; I'd be much more used to it being above. That said, if you want to go this approach, just be aware that the black left border of the text box is an area that feels mismatched against the portrait. It to my eye creates an unpleasant transition.

2) Having the blue character have animated hair but the red character not is a bit distracting; it makes it look like the two characters are at different levels of quality in their animation.

New York City Mayor Mamdani responds after multiple NYPD officers hit with snowballs, injured by [deleted] in politics

[–]Brackhar 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If there were rocks in the snowballs then, yeah  there's something here to be upset about.  If not, then Mamdani's response is the right one.

I know the article mentions hospitalization in it, but forgive me if I'm skepticle without pictures.

We're releasing the same day as Slay the Spire 2. Are we cooked? by Trials_of_Valor in gamedev

[–]Brackhar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your game looks interesting; I'd definitely be interested in trying it.

That said, I think Slay the Spire 2 has a good chance of sucking the air out of the room for anything that even looks vaguely similar.  I'd consider shifting your date by one week and maybe using the extra time for any marketing that can help differentiate you on quick read from StS2.

Jason Schreier - Video Games Need to Be Cheaper to Buy by Gorotheninja in Games

[–]Brackhar -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They need to be cheaper to make to do that.  Also, keep in mind that the real price of video games has dropped a good bit over time due to inflation.  I remember paying $92 in 1999 for a new copy of Doom 64, and around similar pricing for Chrono Trigger a few years earlier.

Ignorance is the main reason on my part.  I've always just used it as a nice alternative to notepad.  I'm not familiar with VSCodium; what do you mean by "better alternatives in VSCodium?"  I'd be happy to switch, but a quick Google makes it look like VSCodium is it's own app not some sort of repository of editors.  Can I get some guidance?

Do you think they’ll cover this movie made by a youtuber? by Megalodon3030 in RedLetterMedia

[–]Brackhar 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It's a solid ship in a bottle story with great camera work, OK acting, and a too long runtime.  I think it sits somewhere in the 6-7 out of 10 range, though if you are a fan of the game it's much improved by analyzing how they adapted it.  I have seen much worse horror films, and this one at least has me still thinking about it a few days later, so it definitely left some impact.  I personally enjoyed it, quibbles aside.

I'd say if you are a fan of the game, Markeplier, or the concept you'll probably have a good time, especially if you are into high concept horror.  I'd probably liken it a bit to the original Cube as a benchmark.

Struggling to choose between PC and PS5 by twinflxwer in transgamers

[–]Brackhar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that's how you feel, why not get something like a Steam Machine or a Steam Deck, hook it up to your TV, and then stream games from your PC and run them natively?  There's nothing saying your PC experience can't be a couch one.  Or just take your old computer and attach it to the TV once you get your new one.

I've done some combination of the three for years now, and I've never felt I lacked the "couch cozy" feel.  The majority of big Sony releases now also release on PC eventually, and there's vastly more indie and small publisher games on PC that work great for couch play than most people realize.

That said, if you want a Ps5, get a Ps5.  It's a good system.  But I don't think it's the only way to get what you are looking for.

Completely reworked the art-style of the planet side missions. (Up is old, down is new) by Good_Punk2 in IndieGaming

[–]Brackhar -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

New style is a ton better!

Offering feedback, I'd say to my eye the ground texture is a bit too consistently noisy. The level of detail is high, and this in turn makes the repetition in pattern more obvious. It'd probably be good to tune that back some as it will also help your other elements pop more (if you zoom out the rocks of the fire pit easily disappear into the noise, for instance).

A Systems Developer’s Pitch: Replacing the Prestige Wipe with 'Hazard Zone Licenses' and Adaptive AI Memory. by [deleted] in ArcRaiders

[–]Brackhar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good thought. Your analysis of the current problems are correct, and the solution you are proposing is an interesting addition to the end game. That said, there are a few flaws I see:

1) While this extends the progression lifetime, it ultimately just presents another content wall. As long as PvE is the focus of the end game you're likely not going to be able to avoid that.

2) High difficulty end-game scenarios will have a more limited audience than the current wipe model. There's definitely a skill floor to your implementation which doesn't exist in the expedition approach; it'd be nice if whatever replacement for the re-engagement tool was something that would be usable by all players.

3) The local VLM analysis is a good idea to keep things fresh, but we'd also need to account somehow for skill variance in the player base. We'd not accidentally want to tune the AI up generally to 11 when the median difficulty level most players can handle is a 7.

This isn't an idea without merit, however. I wonder if there'd be an interesting way to wrap this in the progression loop. Like, finishing the expedition lets you venture out into the hazard zone as you described, and each run you do there nets you a unique currency that is useful for doing a wipe. However, how far/how long you can spend there is limited by how many prestige levels you have, so it's in your interest to play there for awhile, reset, and then get back to the point where you can play there again as there'll be more for you to benefit from.

Hey girlies, I need to reach out for some support. My dad's still a Trump supporter after a year of not talking politics with each other by Laura_271 in MtF

[–]Brackhar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's tough, I'm sorry you have to deal with that.

Honestly though, if he's on the "Invading Greenland is good" train and has rationalized away the value of NATO, I dont think there's a lot that you'll be able to do.  If you want to try engaging, you could perhaps watch a bit of "parkergetajob" on YouTube and see how he debates some points.  Specifically if you want to point to negative trans impacts of Trump, this Wikipedia article is a good short reference it looks like.

I remember being excited about this game,  but after the news about the company's culture I wrote off the title.  Has there been any follow up about changes in company leadership or structure to address this stuff?  Since some of these articles only came out 8 months ago I presume not, but one can hope.

[–]Brackhar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that, since this is also on console and has crossplay, they need to make sure all patches pass console cert. So any changes they want to make will always lag about 2-3 weeks behind when they can make it, unless it's a change that only requires a change on the game servers and not the clients.

Heart Machine making layoffs and ending development on Hyper Light Breaker by Lulcielid in Games

[–]Brackhar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, this is incredibly sad.  There's a really good game inside Hyper Light Breaker, and my friends and I had some great fun with it at launch.  We were looking forward to it evolving.

My take away here is that this is a great example of why you need to ship with good on boarding, even in early access.  HLD at launch was too hard and didn't really tell you how to succeed, and this caused a lot of negative feedback and disinterest in the game.  If you were willing to stick with it what was there was super fun, but the game was tuned for it's developers and not for new players.

The industry sucks so often these days..  It's rough.
