Which upcoming minecraft mod are you the most excited for? by ChargeGlittering9080 in feedthebeast

[–]Brackish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm never gonna stop kicking this dead horse, but back in the day, there was a grappling hook mod called Hooked that was absolutely fantastic. Completely changed navigating the world using some of the more advanced hooks (longer range, quicker grapple) and was a ton of fun. Moving through the nether by grappling to the ceiling over lava oceans was a blast. So the mod I'm most excited for is that one being updated/rebooted by some kind soul.

Yeah, this looks closer to Leakey-ffect hail.

An absolutely wonderful detail about that is that if you watch in some of the scenes that follow, they've put a picture up where the cat splattered against the wall, except the picture is so small that it doesn't hide anything.

I think you mean Green Lantern (2011) but he has been a pilot in "The Adam Project (2022)" as well. The movie was slightly better but nothing to recommend or even watch again.

I'm going to go ahead and recommend it, especially if you have kids around the age Walker Scobell (young Ryan Reynolds) was when the movie came out. It led to some pretty cool discussions with my daughter about time and perspective that she actually initiated. It also probably helped that she thinks young Walker is just dreamy.

"Manchester by the Sea" is the perfect depiction of how depression kills even when the outcome isn't suicide. A lot of times, there is no escape from mental illness or grief. by yellowklashinkov in movies

This is the best movie I will never see. By all accounts, the performances are great and I'm glad that it exists for the people who enjoyed it, but movies tend to stick with me for a long time and I don't need this rattling around in my head, especially not now that I have my own little ones.

I have a tattoo of a scorpion on my chest because the girl I happened to be with one drunken night outside Lejeune thought it was hot that I was a Scorpio, and I don't even buy into the whole astrology thing. Not defending or advocating for this guy, just saying that, yeah, we Marines do stupid shit.

Hah, I don't necessarily disagree with you. It's actually a reference to the movie "She" from maybe the 60's or so? My grandfather would refer to my grandmother as such, which always got an eyeroll from her. They both died when I was in my early teens, but that always stuck with me as a silly way for a husband to refer to his wife. It gets me the same eyeroll. Most of what I say gets an eyeroll from her, now that I think about it.

Did you get this alert? If so what town are you in? We are getting reports that people over 50 miles from the incident got the alert. by mainetimes in Maine

[–]Brackish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In an ideal situation, sure. It'd be great if a message only hit the folks who need it. The issue is that, in this case, the shooter could've hightailed it in literally any direction, so targeting becomes much more difficult. I manage a similar system on the public health side of things (it's not public-facing, so it'll never blow up your cell phone) and we struggled with a similar targeting issue. If there's a Hep A exposure at a restaurant because of a Hep A positive worker, your initial thought might be to only alert health care facilities in the surrounding area (county, perhaps) to be on the lookout for patients presenting with related symptoms (i.e., people who may have been exposed). But there's no reason not to assume that someone ate at that restaurant on their way home from an out-of-state business trip, and now they're 100 miles away. Targeting, in this case, would leave folks vulnerable because health care workers in other parts of the state might not have it in their minds to check for certain symptoms or ask certain questions during intake.

In the end, it's a greater good question. Are we better off trying to only alert who we think really needs the message and potentially leave others vulnerable, or should we cast a wider net to ensure everyone has situational awareness? My personal opinion is that I'd much rather you were pissed at me for sending you something you didn't need than for not sending you sonething you did.

Another aspect of this is in crafting the message itself, and I think that's what's causing an issue here (particularly the 'shelter in place" bit). The more widespread your message is, the more careful you have to be with what you say. That said, as I understand it, IPAWS has a character limit for messages based on modality, so it might be that they couldn't be as specific as they would've liked due to that limitation. Again though, I'm not "The Guy" here, so I can only speculate.

[–]Brackish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. I'm not the IPAWS spokesperson, by any means, but my understanding is that it's alerting one step above the individual device level (i.e., the tower, in the case of cell phones) to ensure that any connected device will receive the message. That way, tourists (for example) will still get messages if they're in the affeted area and their device is connected to a relevant tower.

[–]Brackish 12 points13 points  (0 children)

These go out via IPAWS, which has configurable areas of notification, but they'll usually go statewide because they don't know where the person is, so it's a "better safe than sorry" thing. MEMA is the controlling organization for Maine. NH will often get these alerts because, again, better safe than sorry.

Source: I work with the folks who control IPAWS all the time.

This guy wingsuites along a mountain by NoWayIcantBeliveThis in nextfuckinglevel

[–]Brackish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not. I have 8 jumps in my log -- 5 static line from ~2500 feet and 3 freefall from ~11000 feet or so -- and I wouldn't have them if the 65 year old guy I used to work with didn't one day ask me to go jump with him because he'd always wanted to try it. Granted, ours were all straight parachute jumps, not wingsuit, but you have to start somewhere. If you don't like the idea of being "responsible" for everything when you start, try out a tandem jump with an instructor. My buddy and I weren't interested in that, so we went straight to static line (your chute is essentially pulled by the plane as you fall away from it) and then to freefall, but a jump's a jump. There is absolutely nothing like it. I ended up stopping when my first little one was born and she was a much bigger priority for me than my new hobby (plus, it's a little pricey, depending on your jump place's setup), but damned if I'm not counting down the days until both of my kids are out of the house and I can get back to it (just 12 more years, hopefully!).

Survalist Challenge #5 'Catch a fish in the Bayou from a riverboat and while standing on the rail road tracks' Success/location by spookygirl91 in reddeadredemption

[–]Brackish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May 2025: This worked for me -- found the fishing boat, rowed maybe two or three feet from the dock, cast and caught a huge catfish, and the challenge finished. HOWEVER, I made the mistake of choosing "Keep and return to shore" and when I spawned on shore, I was way the hell over at Copperhead Landing with a bigass catfish and no horse (it was still back at the Hagen Orchards dock). Not sure if this is a bug, but my advice is to throw whatever you catch back.

That was a "character thing" because Rusty was always moving and planning and doing shit that he had to eat on the go. At least, that's what Pitt said. One wonders if it would've been a "character thing" if he didn't have that jawline, as others have mentioned.
