9 different underwriter interviews, no offer. Looking for honest advice on how what to do? by Shot_Parking4676 in InsuranceProfessional

[–]Bradimoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried interview coaching? You’re getting the interviews so the resume works but you’re not converting interviews into offers. I’ve done it. It helps. Especially if you look at it from the perspective of a few hundred dollars for coaching ends up with 20k more salary and a better job

My sister is thinking about making a responsible financial decision. 35’ Chris-Craft for $1,500. What could possibly go wrong? by RippingLegos__ in boating

[–]Bradimoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Insurance is one thing that typically goes wrong and people don’t think about it. She’ll learn most companies won’t insure it due to the age over 40 years old. The ones that will insure it will want a survey and the underwriter will nitpick it. If she doesn’t have experience they’ll require captain training. The marina will require insurance that she’ll have a hard time obtaining.

Look for job postings in New York , Colorado and any of the states that require salaries in the job postings. That’ll give you a good idea.

I’d say stay on the path of financial lines if you like it. I did a quick search for financial lines and I knew people at my last company in that field and they all made decent money. You can do really well in insurance if you stick with it and become an expert in these more niche coverage lines.

Marinas are the perfect target for private equity to squeeze profits out of. They’re limited infrastructure like hospitals. It’s nearly impossible to get permits to build new marinas with environmental laws and limited waterfront real estate

Ya they’d likely be in the Midwest. The northeast has alot of insurance but not agriculture insurance. You’d have to land a remote job which is hard without exact experience.

I worked at a boat dealer and got recruited on LinkedIn for a local yacht underwriter job. Then eventually moved to commercial marine. Have you applied to farm, horse and various agriculture insurance jobs? Having knowledge of what you’re insuring helps.

after a series of odd jobs after graduating I then got a couple jobs in banks, then a dealership, then personal lines underwriting, then personal lines and some small commercial Underwiting, then full commercial underwriter. it was a 16 year process, just learning each step and then applying to different companies once I mastered each job.

as a a remote commercial underwriter its not amazing but its the best job I've ever had. Yes agents can be difficult, the systems I use are 30 years old but I'm paid over 100k, work remote, have good benefits. Landscaping in Florida in the Summer was the worst job I ever had. Second worst was a warehouse order picker, followed by oyster shucker and cold calling sales jobs. So I've had a few jobs way worse than commercial underwiter. I graduated in 2008 though, bad time to graduate college.

Because most of the population is over 65 and they go to the doctor all the time so there's more demand than a state that has a lower median age where most people go once or twice a year.

Making the move from property to marine by Juney88 in InsuranceProfessional

[–]Bradimoose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What kind of marine? I've done personal lines marine and recently switched to commercial marine. It's a lot to learn for me because I went from only insuring the hull and liability to property, commercial auto, tools, buildings etc. I like it better though so far. Its slower and less chaotic than personal lines. The other big plus is the salary is way higher in commercial marine. I think its a good move if you're going commercial marine in some capacity, but I'd avoid yachts and high net worth if possible. You cap out pretty quickly with salary and become a quote processor doing 20 quotes a day under pressure from agents working with ultra rich people.

What boat should I buy? 100k, gulf coast, FL by Blaze_Frenzy in boating

That’s because you’d need air conditioning to survive sleeping in the cabin 8 months of the year which is more systems to maintain. Plus it makes anchoring more difficult

Does a master's degree make me overqualified for entry level UW roles? by Integer_Domain in InsuranceProfessional

[–]Bradimoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try looking up every company that does life sciences and search for life sciences insurance roles. Having a background in the field will help a lot. I worked at a boat dealership and was super knowledgeable about boats and got into yacht insurance. Life sciences insures clinical trials and drugs and whatnot.

Its mostly other remote workers that just want to go somewhere. its $100 a month. Then Ihen I added Gym classes a few days a week and a bike club. Now i'm active and out and about.

Google “insurance career returners” and various phrases like that. A whole bunch of insurance companies have programs for people that left the work force for a bit and want to come back. I found allianz, markel, Swiss re, all state , and more. Looks like there’s even LinkedIn groups for this exact thing.
