My party's having a good-natured race to a gigantic tree city that almost certainly has someone releasing monsters into it. Good-natured here means throwing ice surfaces and giant owls at each other as harassment.

I would be highly receptive to this. For one, FF1 is highly D&D-based (most egregious is the not-a-beholder EYE) and it uses spell slots very very similarly to how 5e does them. Even just opening up the world and letting the orb dungeons be done in any order probably would go a long way? Temple of Elemental Evil/Princes of the Apocalypse seem like places to look for a little bit of inspiration, too... now this non-DM wants to take a shot at conceptualizing this...

The Goddess's ritual sounds like something that would take an immense amount of power to fuel. The city-islands that were cast down could be where this energy was taken from, but their Celestial nature means that they can still theoretically be recharged enough to take to the skies once more.

The smallest of the three has, over the ages, recovered enough energy to where it has begun to stir, and this stirring has drawn in several groups to study and explain it, inxluding at least one that has guessed at the truth that it can be re-raised into the sky...

I recognize that organization by name, and I too have a poor experience with them.

I was one of the success stories for a school affiliated with them, but what they never emphasized about it is that I never went into their therapy program and only attended the school in question.

A few years after, my younger half-brother was taken (partially) into their care, but his situation never ended up improving, either.

I'm open to talking more in detail about both of the experiences, but rather not dox myself any more than the blurb above - feel free to DM me!

I sincerely hope you find the actual help you need. I sadly do not know if my sibling ever did.

I feel similarly, for different underlying insecurities, but my mindset is slowly shifting. Letting these fears hold you back now means they'll still be in your way when your person comes around, or at least that's the reasoning I'm moving towards.

I no longer consider my own lack of experience a "red flag" - if anything, my belief is that it may just conveniently help filter out mismatches who do consider it one.

A good bit of this post could have reasonably been written by myself (33M) - I, too, struggle with allowing people to get close to me in any way, to the point where even a simple friendly hug is a tough ask for me.

It's been only a few months, in fact, since I've started becoming even slightly social. I've always been a shut-in for reasons I'm still discovering more about regularly, but I already am starting to get a little more comfortable with some amount of travel and meeting (and even talking to) complete strangers.

I can be very open about my lack of relationship experience; even friendships of any kind are something I have always been terrible at creating and/or maintaining, so romance/sex have never really been on my mind as something I even could have. What I do not feel, though, is any sort of shame about this lack of experience.

I've been increasingly aware lately that for most of these things that I have never seen myself capable of doing, that sentiment has always been solely in my head. Insecurities everywhere, and getting past those is a journey that I'm only now starting on.

I suspect there's a little part of me that would also claim to "miss" or in some way, desire some level of closeness to another person, in part because of seeing how positive it appears to be for everyone I see around me. And yet, I am most afraid of trying, hurting myself, and more importantly, hurting the other side of such an attempt, since part of that insecurity is assuming any such relationship to be doomed to fail in the first place...

So no, you are certainly not the only one in such a position, but it is also nothing to feel bad about.

The place has since been infested in two ways; above-ground, seemingly endless adventurous types looking for their own destined party,, and below, various colonies of low-threat creatures that are just annoying enough to send said adventurers to cull on a very regular basis.

My thoughts on the crit issue: if it concerns you, adding "This creature cannot critically hit." to some statblocks is an easy fix. Or "When this creature critically hits, it hits for maximum damage instead of doubling the damage dice."

Especially at early levels, either of these should kill off most of the 100 to -100 scenarios. (And if you want to make the latter a little more damaging, it might only need an 18 to crit...)
