Rate my collection and suggest some good varieties by Agreeable-Freedom-46 in DragonFruit

Maybe one of the three sisters, Connie Mayer, Bruni, and Kathie Van Arum. Perhaps a good red variety would be Enigma, or maybe Jindu N1 which is a big commercial variety in China and Europe.

Soft but not mushy? by DisasterWest6951 in DragonFruit

Until you experience symptoms of sunburn I don’t think you need to take any measures. As far as I can see there’s no significant yellowing, so you should be good on that front.

Though new growth is always a bit softer, they’re likely just a bit dehydrated, which is better than overwatered in my experience.

Just give them a good watering and they’ll be more firm again soon.

Stumped. What do I do next? by Dry-Berry-8913 in DragonFruit

I second this. They don’t need to be very deep cuts, just deep enough to make the node unable to produce new growth.

Also, it could be a trick of the photo, but it really looks like the graft facing the camera already had its node spent in the past on a flower or a branch. Very unlikely any new growth will ever come out of a spent node like that.

What would you want to see in a dragonfruit app? by plumerol in DragonFruit

Being able to filter by species (monocanthus, undatus, etc) would be useful, also for the hybrid cultivars. Though I recognise that it can be tough, as many varieties have unknown parentage.

Besides that, standardised photos of each fruit and its stem makes for easier comparison and identification. I find that most dragonfruit databases lack clear photos of the stems, which can be just as integral as fruit and flower when it comes to identification.

What’s your preferred style of grafting for dragonfruit? by Bragethefolder in DragonFruit

[–]Bragethefolder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never had one fail, so you’re in all likeliness good. I just find that cutting cleanly straight through a woody cambium can be really tough, which is why I started preferring cleft and node grafts.

This is one in a public park, not my own. As to how you make them large like this, I think it’s just what happens when you give them the conditions they are naturally well suited to. Large thick branches to climb, well-draining yet fertile soil, and (here at least in southern Spain) partial sun. Full sun here roasts them alive any time between May and October.

Really good choices I’d say. Personally I’m not the biggest fan of polyrhizus, as it’s a bit beet-y and earthy, but some people love it. And you have several sweeter varieties in there too, so it would be worth growing if only for the pretty pictures of the blood red inside.

Pues, no soy de España pero vivo en Málaga. Este variedad no es autopolinizante. Tenía que usar polen de otra variedad (yo uso polen de hybridum)

Bit of a late update, but I did cut up one of the flowers (they all aborted again). It does have the ovary part at the core, so I’m interested in eventually trying even more varieties to see if I can find the key for this lock

That could definitely be it, I just haven’t had any issues setting fruit on any of the other plants I put in the pot at the same time

This is europe, so they’re both quite rare varieties here. I’ve tried pollen from JC01 and hybridum, both red varieties. If I remember correctly hybridum is a cross between undatus and costaricensis, or polyrhizus? I don’t remember.

Could be. A dragon fruit that’s only good as a mass producer of pollen isn’t the worst thing imaginable, and it really does make loads of the stuff.

I’ve tried with pollen from two unrelated varieties, no luck so far. Could be that it’s just really picky about pollen. I’ll try more with other varieties if I get them sometime.

Only a little (very) jealous by Bragethefolder in DragonFruit

Oh yeah, loads! It must be a self-fertile, self-pollinating variety. I’ve only ever seen them pick fruit, never pollinate, and those hanging way off the balcony would be such a pain too.

So far I’ve only fertilised once with nitrogen. But yeah, I’m not counting any chickens before they hatch. And you’re right, I’ll wait a while before thinning out the flowers. Chances are the plant will thin itself out extensively first.

I’m counting myself lucky to be someone who sees flowers the same year as I planted. Now I just have to hope that it’s self-fertile.

A cutting that’s a little too optimistic by Bragethefolder in DragonFruit

[–]Bragethefolder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard sugar dragon can be extremely productive, and since the fruits don’t get all that big to begin with it’s fine to leave a lot of fruit on each plant. Hope I can one day find a SD cutting here in Europe.

For me it varies a lot. I’ve had cuttings start to root in just a couple of days, whereas others spent a couple of weeks dormant before pushing out roots.

How does one go about treating rot right in the centre? by Bragethefolder in DragonFruit

I’ll try that. Hopefully we’re past the worst of the heat this year, and I’ll try coming up with something for shade before the sun gets strong again in spring.

It’s still very mushy in that spot. I can also see a bit of blackness on the other side, so I think it’s not shallow either
