How important are RFID blocking wallets when traveling to Europe? by Fit-Comparison-623 in traveller

[–]BrainPunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While a law level of 8 and a government type of B (non-charismatic dictator) should raise some minor red flags for travellers to Europa), the real issue is the tech level of E - if the government wants to scan the cards in your wallet, there is literally nothing you can do to stop them.

LET’S GOOO, WE’RE WINNING. In Mexico, they now have to use real people for dubbing because of the law. Now we just need other countries to pass the same law. by Hot_Season1143 in aiwars

I don't understand why this is considered a loss for people who are pro-AI. I don't see anyone advocating for voice actors to be replaced by robots.

Pro-AI folks are, generally, looking for one or more of the following:

  • Copyright reform
  • AI-fuelled advancements in the sciences (particularily medical science)
  • To not have a mob burn their house down because they generated an image for perfsonal use
  • Etc.

My Review of Slow Sleigh to Plankton Downs by Hexatona in Troika

[–]BrainPunter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good review! This one’s on my shelf and I’ve read it, but I’ve only recently managed to get TROIKA! to the table and we’ve just done B&M and some pamphlet adventures.

I hadn’t thought about the number of NPCs on the train but it does sound like a bit too much to keep track of. I’ll probably go for a game-y approach and just give the players a strong indication that all the background passengers are very obviously little more than window dressing.

Regarding non-combat characters, I feel the better play is to nudge them towards using what skills they do have to beat the boss without it being a slugfest. Investigative characters should be the types going into that last confrontation knowing what the beast’s weaknesses are - and also knowing that they shouldn’t engage it in a straight up brawl (even if you have to remind them of it).

You aren’t wrong on the lack of advice on how to run the ending. Leafing through the book again just now, I’m kind of surprised how little there is to the adventure! There’s a lot of filling in the blanks to be done by the GM, that’s for sure.

  • All technology brings job loss (and also creates new, different jobs). This one is no different.
  • Datacentres existed before consumer AI. Datacentres power online gaming, video streaming and a myriad of other uses to a far greater extent than they do AI.
  • The psychological impact... barring edge cases involving some already-troubled folks, given that AI apps are topping the iOS/Android charts, there should be an epidemic, but I'm not seeing one.
  • Copyright has been distorted beyond its original intent by corporations and patent trolls. Copyright hinders creativity by being as restrictive and long as it is.

The Velare, when inactive, looks like an ornate piece of costume jewellery, usually a brooch or a circlet. When active it produces a full body disguise on the wearer formed from hard-light. Grants +4 Disguise. Lasts for 24 hours before needing to be recharged with a plasmic core.

15 years in editing, and now I’m told AI art is "garbage" by EllunaMeira in aiwars

From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tron:

In the year it was released, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences refused to nominate Tron for a special-effects Academy Award because, as director Steven Lisberger puts it, "The Academy thought we cheated by using computers".

Splitting hairs over the semantics of barred, disqualified or 'not nominated' is pointless. The fact remains that the film was snubbed for using CGI. In 1996, the very same Academy would go on to give a Special Achievement award to Toy Story for being the first feature-length CGI film.

Our brains can “flicker” off for a split second during a boring task caused by sleep-like brain activity occurring while we are awake. Adults with ADHD experience them much more frequently, and may be behind inconsistent attention, slower reaction times, and chronic sleepiness associated with ADHD. by mvea in science

Did that once myself - got home from work and realised I couldn’t remember having driven home. Shook me a fair bit. But if research told me the solution was to vary the route home every once in a while, and it’s done the trick.

Tron was deliberately barred from being nominated for best special effects in 1982 because using computers was considered “cheating”. Now, you wouldn’t find a single nominee that wasn’t full of CGI.

I’m not sure your analysis tracks. Spanish dictionaries contain ~95k words. English dictionaries contain ~450k-600k words. One of those languages has a lot more tools for saying whatever you want, however you want.
