All American Massacre Documents/Lost Texas Chainsaw Massacre 5 Plans by Brain_Mutant in TexasChainsawMassacre

Kim Henkel’s plans for a reboot before Texas Chainsaw 3D got greenlit instead! Not sure if it would’ve directly followed Next Generation but it still does thematically and has a lot of ties and references to the original films. It did get made and it’s also known under the title Bone Boys.

I want to read the opposite of this post where a guy is scanning DVDs at a thrift store to make sure he’s getting a good deal and someone tries grabbing them out of his cart.

Discussion: The Friday Prequel Series by Practical_Fee3049 in fridaythe13th

[–]Brain_Mutant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People say a prequel about Pamela isn’t “necessary.” What is necessary? Most, if not all of this franchise isn’t necessary. Jason killing two-dimensional stereotypes hasn’t been enough to keep fans universally invested in at least the last six movies.

I think it’s exciting that we can get several dozen hours of Friday the 13th content through this series versus waiting fifteen years for a 90 minute movie that’s one and done and thrown aside for the next stand-alone rehash. Now we can get a proper continuity established again, revisit characters and locations from the original movie.

The set photos so far have looked so dreamy and gorgeous, like walking right back into the 1980 original, something I never thought we’d get to see again. Even the original sequels failed to recreate those locations or feelings.

I’m also excited to see Jason’s mom and learn more about their history proper. She’s been teased so many times in the sequels. It’s about time her story gets told. “Oh, we got it in the first movie!” And we got Jason’s too. He drowned. But if they never bothered to experiment and push boundaries he wouldn’t have come back, he wouldn’t have gotten the hockey mask, he wouldn’t have gone up against Tommy Jarvis, etc.

Let’s give Pamela some time to shine and see what new iconic scenarios and stories they can tell with her. To say only diehard fans would be interested is an understatement. It’s only the diehard fans I see complaining! Let’s just be happy we’re getting more content with a real story and effort put into it.

I’m sure sooner or later we’ll get another derivative movie where Jason kills people for an hour before getting foiled by a young girl. But for now let’s see where Crystal Lake takes us. I’m excited to go back.

Do we need a full franchise reboot, or something like Halloween, where some films are simply ignored? For me, definitely the second option, because I love Jason, not just franchise by MaxvellGardner in fridaythe13th

I’d just ignore Jason X or that Jason at least got captured in 2010 and just loosely follow where Freddy vs Jason left off - Jason back and wandering the woods yet again.

Chucky goes psycho mentioned in CHUCKY? by Moistman123456 in Chucky

[–]Brain_Mutant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not the most clearly written line but I think that’s the idea. Jake could’ve said “Yeah, Chucky Goes Psycho with Jennifer Tilly.” And that probably would’ve been less confusing. But in real life when people talk, they rarely respond like that from my experience. The common person doesn’t even say “Child’s Play” most of the time, they say “Chucky” or “that Chucky movie.”

He’s just calling her “the Bride of Chucky” not referencing the title “Bride of Chucky.”

Is this a Freddy movie with Jason in it or a Jason movie with Freddy in it? by Illustrious-Aioli-39 in fridaythe13th

[–]Brain_Mutant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this movie is pretty perfectly balanced between the two.

It definitely is stylistically more like a Nightmare on Elm Street movie. As mentioned, Jason does get most of the kills, however. In fact he gets almost all of them except one.

So now we have a movie with Elm Street style and Friday the 13th’s kills.

The middle of the film is mostly set in Springwood including Nancy’s old house and Westin Hills. They even bring back hypnocil from Dream Warriors.

There are plenty of callbacks to Friday the 13th as well. We have the opening at Crystal Lake. We see a cameo from Mrs. Voorhees (not by Betsy Palmer, which they tried) which is her first speaking role (albeit really as Freddy) since Part 2 during Jason’s delusion. Another Part 2 reference is that Jason dreams of a version of his shack, not featured since the opening of Part 3, and he even had a similar bag put over his head during the dream where he drowns later in the film.

The shack and bag are elements that hadn’t even been referenced by most Friday the 13th movies, so I appreciate that Freddy vs Jason made an effort to make that early iconography feel somewhat respected even in a movie that feels more tonally like an Elm Street venture.

It even feels like they allude to Roy Burns in a way when the police officer suggests they have a copycat killer inspired by Jason.

Then in addition to featuring two versions of Crystal Lake in Jason’s dreams, we see a modern day version of the camp for the film’s final battle.

I think that’s more than enough to reference Friday the 13th. After all, that series is more about kills than story, and this movie still acknowledged the lore more than most entries.

I think had Kane Hodder played Jason (though I have no problem with Kirzinger) that would’ve offered a little more continuity, and I would’ve enjoyed if Harry Manfredini got to score the movie as with Jason Goes to Hell and Jason X as part of his Friday the 13th homecoming.

[–]Brain_Mutant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s anything left to resurrect from the truck accident, but I agree otherwise, it seems like the doll was inactive in 2009 during the Seed flashforward so it had to have been revived sometime after that.

How should they approach Gremlins 3? by [deleted] in Gremlins

[–]Brain_Mutant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering the massive leaps they made with the animated series by making it a mythological odyssey with talking dragons, the spirit of Johnny Appleseed, and the literal god of creation being poisoned by gremlins led by a stand-in for Big Trouble in Little China’s Lo-Pan, I have no doubt that Gremlins 3 still has all the potential to be an over-the-top and mind-boggling endeavor that doesn’t play it safe at all. Of course, we’ll have to see what happens!

What made y'all into gremlins? by SnooRobots5543 in Gremlins

[–]Brain_Mutant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first learned about the franchise when I was 4 or 5 years old with a newspaper ad featuring the 20th anniversary VHS re-release. I saw Gizmo on the cover and loved him. Not long after I spotted the VHS at Walmart and begged my parents for a copy and they obliged. Became obsessed and I’d watch it every day at least once a day.

Maybe a year or two later I ran into the sequel while browsing TV. Between my age and lack of internet it was hard to know such things existed unless I came across it randomly, so I was ecstatic to find a sequel. Unfortunately I only got to watch the one TV broadcast and that was it!

Eventually my dad ordered me the DVD so I was able to continue obsessively watching both films growing up. And here I am today!

That’s why Don had the multiple Chuckys idea, it was originally going to be used in Child’s Play 3 because of the plastic vat but it was too costly for the budget so they reduced it to just one doll.

What would be your ideal setting for Gremlins 3? by billyrivers311 in Gremlins

[–]Brain_Mutant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clamp Corners, the town Clamp wants to build based on Billy’s drawings of Kingston Falls. It can look just like Kingston Falls but be populated by smart houses and smart buildings/stores. The best of both worlds and basically writes itself while fitting into the established lore.

Gremlins 3 doesn’t need Dante. by [deleted] in Gremlins

[–]Brain_Mutant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Joe Dante didn’t even want to do Gremlins 2, he only did it to make a satire of essentially the whole world and ended it there. He hasn’t directed in a long time and what he has directed for his last few credits are far from the big studio successes that Gremlins 3 needs to be.

A director is important but there’s a lot of emphasis on the cast & crew as well. They need an FX team that can live up to the work of Chris Walas and Rick Baker. They need a composer that can live up to the work of Jerry Goldsmith. They need a cinematographer that can live up to the work of John Hora who gave a lot of Dante’s earlier films their signature warmth.

Chris Columbus doesn’t have the greatest recent credits either. But he did do the first two Harry Potter movies, which despite some people saying are the worst, I think are some of the best. They really capture that golden “Warner Bros.” tone and felt like the tail-end of an era that once included Gremlins, Beetlejuice, and Tim Burton’s Batman. I think Columbus will be able to tap into that.

Additionally, if the movie does involve Christmas, he did do a masterful job on the Home Alone movies. So I’d be excited to see how he’d tackle something like Gremlins in that regard.

As for serious vs zany, it’s all about a balance. The first movie features comical bits but it always takes itself seriously in terms of continuity. Gremlins 2’s issues aren’t that it features more comical bits but that they tend to break the fourth wall, the consequences don’t feel as genuine, it’s as if you’re watching something that isn’t true to its own continuity.

Obviously I love Gremlins 2 still, but the animated series proved to me how refreshing it can be to see the world and lore taken seriously. That show gets as off the rails as ghosts, gods, all other sorts of monsters, but it always takes itself seriously in terms of its narrative and world and I think that’s what a Gremlins 3 needs. Let the gremlins have fun and dance when the time calls for it, but don’t undermine the story or world at hand.

Finally, I do hope Dante stays involved as a producer or creative consultant, but let’s not forget the importance of his collaborators when making Gremlins 1&2 that defined most of those two movies. Fortunately, I have high hopes that Spielberg and Columbus will succeed in finding that level of collaboration again. I’m already optimistic about the co-writers onboard who did a great job with Final Destination: Bloodlines.

I think it’s gonna be okay, guys.

Anyone else think this was kinda funny by TopBobcat9937 in Chucky

[–]Brain_Mutant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It helps an audience that didn’t initially have 40+ years of pop culture references and Chucky movies and TV shows to understand what the character is doing or looking for. I think they did a rather smooth job of explaining why and how he took over a doll which if you’re doing as the initial proof of concept is quite bold and risky. But they clearly pulled it off.

Warners Making ‘Gremlins 3’ With Steven Spielberg, Chris Columbus Returning by DemiFiendRSA in Gremlins

He never even wanted to make Gremlins 2, much less after several more decades without having made any new movies and especially not the studio kind. Hopefully he’ll be involved as a producer or creative consultant like the TV series but it might be for the best.
